This year, the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit is designating
the full month of December as
Mitzvah Month. The Super Sunday
phon-a-thon is the major event
kicking off the month from 10 a.m.-
2 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the Max M.
Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township and the Jewish
Community Center in Oak Park,
where a community blood drive will
be held. This traditional beginning
of Federation's Annual Campaign
has been extended to include
Monday, Dec. 6, and Wednesday,
Dec. 8, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the
Federation building.
Additionally, Federation will team
with other agencies, such as
Elderlink, Hillel, B'nai Brith Youth
Organization and the Jewish
Community Council, to provide
opportunities for doing mitzvot
throughout the month, culminating
with Mitzvah Day on Dec. 24. To
accomplish all these deeds,
Federation is seeking hundreds of
community volunteers.
"Super Sunday brings together
supporters of all ages and from all
corners of the community," said
Marta Rosenthal of Franklin, co-
chair of the 2005 Annual Campaign

with Michael Horowitz of West
Bloomfield. Each gift has the power
to deliver help, hope and dignity to
those in need in metro Detroit,
Israel and around the world,
Horowitz said.
Eighteen local agencies partner
with Federation and receive their
principle source of funding from the
Annual Campaign, including Jewish
Family Services, JVS, JCC and
Tamarack Camps. The campaign
also supports thousands of lives
overseas in countries like Israel and
Argentina.
Every pledge increase or new gift
to the campaign this year will be
matched dollar for dollar through
the Jean and Samuel Frankel
Challenge Fund.
Super Sunday chairs are Doris
Blechman of Bloomfield Hills, Susie
Citrin of Birmingham, Roselyn
Blanck, Howard Rosen and Melinda
Soble, all of West Bloomfield, with
Karen Alpiner of Franklin as adviser.
To volunteer for any of the mitz-
vah projects, including JVS
Chanukah parties Dec. 14, 17 and
22, call Carol Kaczander at (248)
203-1466.

Unexpected Find

Deb and Frank Cummings of
Madison Heights only wanted to
expand their home. However, they
got much more than they planned
when construction workers found
black mold behind the drywall.
An environmental test confirmed
the black mold, or stachybotrus,
which contains a toxin that can
cause serious health problems. The
couple was not allowed to return to
their home, and work began to
remove the mold. In the end, only
the four exterior walls, windows and
doors were left standing. All furni-
ture and clothing, even wedding
photos, had to be tossed.
Their insurance does not cover
mold infestation, so now they are
$95,000 in debt and still paying the
mortgage and two car payments.
Deb and Frank and their pets have
been living with her parents, Jerry
and Bev Rosenthal in Oak Park.

On the positive side, neighbors,
volunteers and businesses have
joined in helping them recover.
Linda Bibbs, a case manager at
Jewish Family Service in Southfield,
was able to get drywall, screws, tape
and glue donated for the project.
The response has been over-
whelming to the couple, says Deb's
sister, Lynn Rosenthal of Oak Park.
Those wishing to donate labor or
supplies may contact Gary George, a
fellow Madison Heights resident
who set up a Web site about the
couple's plight, at

mold-house.html
Also, The Cummings Family Fund
has been established at Peoples State
Bank, 1700 E. 12 Mile, Madison
Heights. Call (248) 545-2109.
