Jewish Family Service, a licensed out-
patient clinic with offices in Southfield
and West Bloomfield, provides social
and mental health services to adults,
children and families. Areas of focus
include parent/child concerns, adop-
tion, divorce and blended family issues,
substance abuse treatment, and domes-
tic abuse/dating violence counseling
and shelter.
JFS also provides a fill] line of sup-
port services aimed at maintaining the
dignity and independence of older
adults.

Bar-Ilan Expands Staff
Dena Raminick has been appointed
Midwest associate director of the
Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan University.
Raminick will be instrumental in
developing strategic marketing and
fund-raising plans for the Midwest,
focusing on the 50th anniversary and
Jubilee Mission to Ramat Gan, Israel,
this June.
Raminick will be responsible for
fund-raising, recruitment and donor
relations. She is a member of Temple
Shir Shalom and resides in West
Bloomfield.
Contest Theme: 350 Years
To encourage students to explore the
cultural wealth of "350 Years of
Extraordinary Jews in America,"
Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education will sponsor an essay and
poster contest, open to students in
grades six through 12.
Students can write an essay of 1,000
words or less or design a poster illus-
trating the topic "How Did One
American Jew Contribute to Our
Country and What's the Message for
Me?"
Contest entries for each medium
will be judged in two divisions, one
for middle school, grades six through
eight; and the other for high school
students, grades nine through 12. The
grand prize in each category will be a
Jewish heritage trip to New York City,

AJC Committee Slates Talk
The American Jewish Committee-
Metropolitan Detroit Chapter and the
American Association of Jewish
Lawyers and Jurists-Detroit Chapter
will host Chapman Distinguished
Professor of Law Paul Finkelman of the
University of Tulsa College of Law,
7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building,
Bloomfield Township.
Professor Finkelman was the chief
expert witness in the 2002 Alabama
Ten Commandments case and his lec-
ture is tided, "More than the Ten
Commandments — A
Look at 350 Years of
Jewish Engagement in
American
Jurisprudence."
The evening's pro-
gram is underwritten
by Judge Avern Cohn
and
the law firm of
Finkelman
Pepper Hamilton LLP. The evening's
co-chairs are Brian J. Kott of the law
firm Lewis & Munday PC and Max
Newman of the law firm of Schafer and
Weiner PLLC.
A dessert reception will follow the
program. There is a $5 charge per guest

JCC Receives Grant
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit recently received
a grant for $7,000 from Ronald
McDonald House Charities (RMHC)
of Southeastern Michigan.
The grant will be used to purchase
recreational equipment for the aquatics,
day camp, child development, sports
and recreation and special needs depart-
ments housed and operated within
both the West Bloomfield and Oak
Park locations of the JCC.
Thanksgiving Giving
One-hundred Jewish families in need
received kosher Thanksgiving food bas-
kets this year, thanks to the Jeannette
and Harry Goldberg family and Jewish
Family Service volunteers.
Each of the past 23 years, the
Goldbergs have collected money from
family and friends toward the purchase
of Thanksgiving food packages. The
food is dropped off at the Yad Ezra
Kosher Food Bank in Berkley and dis-
tributed by Jewish Family Service vol-
Bookmark Design Honored
Natalie Siegel, a first-grader, is the
grand prize winner of the Temple Israel
Bookmark Contest. Her design, featur-
ing the Torah and the dove of peace,
was selected by a panel of judges from
600 entries submitted by Temple Israel
Early Childhood Center and Tyner
Religious School students.
Siegel will receive a $25 gift certifi-
cate to the eighth annual Temple Israel
Book Fair, Dec. 5-9, and her bookmark
will be reproduced and distributed.

Chanukah Fun Planned
The Adat Shalom Synagogue family
will celebrate Chanukah at a "Dreidel
Dance" Wednesday, Dec. 8, beginning
at 6 p.m. Parents, grandparents and
children of all ages are welcome.
Following the kosher buffet supper
will be a candlelighting ceremony, a
Chanukah songfest and dancing.
There will be arts and crafts projects
and Chanukah cookie decorating.
Dinners will be available for purchase
at $8 per person.
Chairing the evening will be Norma

Lederman.
