Instead of showing A wheat and soybean HARRY future trading prices, KIRSBAUM every video monitor at Columnist every trading desk was tuned to local news as the O.J. Simpson verdict was announced. I remember the gasp heard around the room as the Juice got his freedom. I also remember some cheers. There's been much talk since then that the O.J. Simpson trial had exposed a racial divide that most whites thought was long a aone. 0 I haven't thought much about the trial — at least until the Scott Peterson verdict came out last week. I haven't paid as much attention to the story of Scott, Laci, Connor and Amber as I had of 0.1 Nicole and Ron, but wasn't Peterson con- victed on the same level of circumstantial evidence that O.J. was found not guilty? O.J. was famous even before the Dream Team and racism seeped into the Rice trial. The Petersons were not famous; but the timing of Laci's disappearance during Christmas, the attractiveness of the couple, and the appearance of Amber Frey made the trial national in scope. Simpson was later found "liable" for the deaths in civil court and has taken his "search for the killers" to public golf courses in Florida. Peterson could face the death penalty in his sentencing hearing later this month, but we can all expect a round of appeals. I wonder what would happen if the Harry Kirsbaums e-mail address is lilcirsbaum@thejewishnews.com fates of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were delayed 10 years; would the verdict be the same? Could the same level of circumstantial evi- dence that convicted Scott convict the Juice? Political Predictions In Iraq this week, the fight in Fallujah is nearly over, as the hundreds of U.S.- trained Iraqi troops who chose not to desert joined with U.S. forces to root out the hundreds of insurgents who didn't get the memo that they were sup- posed to head to Mosul or Baghdad. Now that Secretary of State Colin Powell is resigning and will probably be replaced by National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, there is no longer a moderate voice in Bush's war cabinet; and the number of cabinet members who actually fought in a war has been reduced to one, Donald Rumsfeld, who I believed served in the War of 1812. Democracy is on the march. I just wish more Iraqis were really willing to march with us. And while we're on the subject of the cabi- net shuffle, Bill O'Reilly made a case for appointing former President Bill Clinton as secretary of state on his Nov. 15 O'Reilly Factor broadcast. Why should he have all the fun? I have my own pre- diction based on events from last week- end: Vice President Dick Cheney will check into the hospital because of "cold symp- toms" once too often within the next year, Powell and he will resign. President Bush will appoint former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as successor. Rudy will then run for president in 2008 against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in a rematch of their not-to-be New York senatorial bout in 2000 (Rudy didn't run due to his prostate cancer diagnosis). Don King will not be involved, but he will try to sell out Madison Square Garden anyway.
