Bloomfield Hills
42875 Woodward Ave

Oregon and Santa Barbara, Calif.
Four years ago, she settled down in
New York City, where she teaches
playwriting skills and acting in the
public schools.
"I'm very happy where I am now,"
she said. "I actually have an apart-
ment full of stuff and a stable career."
Along with her teaching career,
Grimberg also is assistant managing
director of Picon Pie, an Off-
Broadway play about American
Jewish actress Molly Picon.
"So I'm immersed at the moment
in Jewish culture and the Yiddish tra-
dition," said Grimberg, whose father
was a member of a very different
Jewish community — the insular
pocket of Singaporean Jews.
"About 200 Jews live in Singapore,"
she said. "They all know each other;
they go to shut together."
When she was about 6 years old,
Grimberg, her brother and three sis-
ters moved with their mother to
Harperden, about 20-30 miles out-
side London.
"It was a very Christian area," she
said, "but we celebrated Jewish holi-
days and my brother had a bar mitz-
vah."
When she was 19, Grimberg moved
to Hulda, the kibbutz outside
Rehovot where Israeli writer Amos
Oz spent his childhood. "I was very
happy there," she said.
In addition to Cycling„ which won
the Sherrill C. Corwin and the
Ivletropolitan Theatre awards for its
California premiere, Grimberg has
written several other plays. Among
them, The Honeyrnakers, about a
Ugandan Indian family in London
faced with racist thugs, was produced
in Los Angeles and New York.
