Some of Sue and Doug Harris' cookbooks are worth hundreds of dollars to collectors.

cult, they say. An increasing number
of collectors are out there, which
drives prices up and makes finding
the books more challenging.
Then there's the scarcity of the
books themselves.
"There aren't that many old ones
left," Doug explains, and those that
are available are falling apart. "Even if
you see an old cookbook in bad con-
dition, buy it," he advises. You can't
wait around for the good ones."
Some collectors are put off by the
stains and writing often found in the
cookbooks; but as far as the Harrises
are concerned, this only adds to the
value.
"We love the food smears because it
means some child probably had fun
cooking," Elaine says. "Sometimes,
you see writing beside the recipe:
`Good!' or 'Never again!'"
What does bother her: tossed-aside
sentiments.
"You'll see 'Happy Birthday to
Susan from Grandma, 1918', and I
just can't help but wonder why wasn't
this passed down?"
The Harris' own collection, which
they one day will give to their chil-
dren, is in the basement, the kitchen,
the living room. The books have
many happy and funny titles that
invite you straight into the kitchen:
The Hocus-Pocus Magical Cookbook,
Crunchy Bananas, The Julie
Eisenhower Cookbook and 36 Strange
Animals Waiting To Eat. There are
cookbooks from Disney, Pillsbury,
Betty Crocker and Better Homes and
Gardens.
Their children will get their par-
ents' other collections one day, too.
Not just the soda-shop glasses, but
Elaine's yarn supplies and, "Oh, I col-
lect cookie cutters, too. I've got
Oscar, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire
State Building.
"And do you need a buffalo? I've
got a buffalo." Li
