J the family, including any current dogs, present. Adoption cost is based on the age and medical condi- tion of the pug." THE NATHANS City: Farmington Kudos: Pug Rescuers Dental practice manager Larry Nathan and his wife, Kathy a loss prevention ana- lyst, spend their evenings, weekends and vacations transporting, caring for and finding homes for pugs. Since founding the nonprofit Michigan Pug Rescue in April 2000, they've placed more than 200 pugs. Larry, how did you start rescuing dogs? "I have had pugs since I was about 12. When Kathy said I needed to find a hobby, she purchased a Dog Fancy maga- zine that had an article about a 'Pug Rescue' in Florida. After working with them, we decided to open our own res- cue organization." How far have you gone for a rescue? "We've gone to Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri." What happens when you get a pug? "Every pug is taken to the vet for a thorough examination, including being vaccinated, spayed or neutered, if not already done; and their teeth are cleaned, if necessary. All are micro- chipped (permanent identification sys- tem implanted under the dog's skin). We disclose any ongoing health prob- lems of all of our pugs." How can one adopt a pug? "You must complete an 11-page appli- cation, submit complete veterinary records of any pets owned in the last five years and consent to a home visit by one of our volunteers, with all members of What about proceeds from the volunteer-run Michigan Pug Rescue's Universal Animal Rescue store in Warren? "The store was opened with the intent to make money. I go to the puppy mill auctions to purchase pugs living in deplorable conditions. In addition, there is the cost of spaying or neutering puppy-mill dogs as well as nursing them to [good] health. Universal Mall donates the space." "Areas that people may assist include fostering, assisting at the store, writing the newsletter, helping with the annu- al Farmington Founders Day Parade and annual MPR reunion and picnic." What about a pug no one adopts? "It remains in the foster care pro- gram until a suitable family is found. If a pug has a medical condition that prevents it from being adopted, it remains in the foster care system for the remainder of its life. We are inter- ested in only one thing: finding 'forev- er homes' for our fur babies."
