hat better way to celebrate
the 350th anniversary of
Jews arriving in America
than with patriotic Broadway songs
composed by Jewish American corn-
posers?
Nearly 700 Jewish community
members packed Orchestra Hall on
Nov. 14 for a rousing Detroit
Symphony Orchestra Pops concert
that marked the kickoff of the local
350th anniversary celebration.
Peter Cummings, DSO chairman
emeritus and vice chairman of devel-
opment, welcomed the audience,
which also included regular ticket
holders.
He spoke about how fitting it was
for the Jewish community to be cele-
brating its anniversary in the Max M.
Fisher MusicCenter.
"Our hope was that the music cen-
ter would be a place where the Detroit
community would celebrate its mile-
stones," said Cummings, honorary
event chair.
The stage was totally filled for the
concert — the orchestra took center
stage;
three choirs surrounded them
b -
and three featured vocalists worked
the stage out front. Erich Kunzel,
Pops music adviser, prefaced each
song with a historical anecdote.
"The Broadway All-American" con-
cert featured music by Irving and Ira
Berlin, George Gershwin, Richard
Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein and oth-
ers. Audience members could be seen
singing along and a few wiped away
tears as some of the military songs
were sung. The encore got everyone to
their feet to sing along with "God
Bless America."
A gala champagne reception fol-
lowed in honor of the 350th celebra-
tion. All three floors of the music cen-
ter atrium were filled with patrons.
"In hindsight, I can see those 23
Jews arriving in New York marked the
beginning of a dynamic new chapter
of Jews in the diaspora," Judge Avern
Cohn, honorary chair of the Michigan
Coalition for the 350th Celebration,
told those at the reception.
"Not even during the Golden Age
of Spain have Jews flourished and
prospered like they have in the United
States. We continue our commitment
as bearers of freedom throughout the
world."
