unhappiness, including the death of two
children (one from disease, another in
an accident).
Decc,a's relationship with much of her
family was forever strained because of
her elopement with Romilly. While
Decca and Unity continued to be close,
of course they were terribly divided
because of their politics.
It was Diana, however, for whom
Decca reserved most of her ire. They
didn't speak for years, and met again
when the eldest sister, Nancy, was dying,
and then only on the coldest terms.
Interestingly, the Mitford parents also
were divided on the issue of Hider.
Sydney found much to admire about
Hitler — not specifically his anti-
Semitism (she did express some sadness
about the Jews who suffered under his
regime), but his leadership qualities and
ardent anti-communism.
Her husband, however, hated Hider.
David finally moved out of the house
over the issue. Though he and his wife
remained friendly, and even affection-
ate, he never forgave Sydney for her
kind words about the Nazi leader.

Houdini Recipes

Recently I read in The Jewish
News about one of my favorite
figures from history, Houdini. Now
I'm wondering if Tell Me Why can
make magic for me and provide me
with information about what kinds
of foods Houdini enjoyed (even bril-
liant magicians had to perform
mundane human activities like eat-
ing, right?).
Yes, astonishingly enough
Houdini did indeed eat. And if
you would like to get a taste of the food
he loved, try these:

Q

A

HOUDINI'S
CHICKEN PAPRIKA
2 1/2 lb. chicken, cut in pieces
3 medium onions, chopped
4 T. margarine
2 T. olive oil
1 1/2 T. paprika
1/2 t. sugar
1 cup flour
1/4 t. black pepper
1/4 t. garlic powder

1/4 t. basil leaves
1/2 t. salt
2 1/2 lb. can tomatoes, undrained
1/2 cup white wine
Saute onions in margarine until gold-
en. Remove and set aside. Add rest of
margarine and olive oil to skillet; add
paprika and sugar. Heat, and mix well.
Add the rest of the seasonings to the
flour in a plastic bag; put in chicken
pieces and coat thoroughly.
Add chicken to hot oil mixture and
brown on all sides. Drain fat from skil-
let.
Add tomatoes (broken up with a
fork) and wine to chicken in skillet.
Add onions and simmer 4-5 minutes
until tender. Taste for seasonings. Stir
occasionally. Serve over noodles.

HOUDINI'S BREAD PUDDING
6 slides white bread, buttered on one
side
1 quart whole milk
1 cup sugar
6 eggs
1 t. vanilla nutmeg, to taste
Preheat over to 325F. Butter a shallow
baking dish. Place bread, buttered side
up, in a single layer in dish. Scald milk
until bubbling at edges.
In a large bowl, slightly beat eggs.
Add sugar and vanilla and blend.
Gradually and gently add milk. Pour
over bread. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
Place dish in a larger pan. Pour hot
tap water in larger pan until it comes up
to the sides, as high as the pudding.
Bake at 325F for 40 minutes. (Houdini
liked pitted black Bing cherries on top).

Editor's note: These recipes were graciously
provided by Marie Blood, whose mother
was the sister of Bess, Houdini wife.
Marie Blood lived for a time with her
aunt and famous Uncle Hariy, and has
since written her recollections of those days
as well as spoken about her memories of
Houdini.

Havdalah Wine

Whenever I participate in a
Havdalah ceremony, which sep-
arates Shabbat from the rest of the
week, I notice that whoever fills the
wine cup does so until it's almost
overflowing. Why is that done?
Filling the Havdalah wine cup is
said to reflect one's hope that the
upcoming week will be filled with abun-
dance. This tradition reflects an ancient
custom, not specifically Jewish but
rather held universally, that spilling wine
offered protection against "evil spirits."
Apparendy, the spirits would take some
sips of the wine and then be happy
enough to leave everyone alone. ❑
