Typically, sisterhood gift shops are set
up as fund-raisers for synagogue or
community programs. "We use very lit-
tle for our own functions, where we
charge admission instead," Paberzs said.
"The money we make often goes to
things related to women, like Safe
House Domestic Violence Shelter in Ann
Arbor. We also help with scholarship
funds for children in our temple to go
to Israel or to camp."
At Temple Israel, profits go into the
sisterhood fund, which uses them in
ways including donating Chanukah can-
dles and hamentashen to the religious
school, providing camp and youth
group national convention scholarships

and helping fund synagogue renova-
tions.
"In the past, we re-decorated the
bride's and groom's rooms, paid for the
beautiful sisterhood ark in Korman Hall
and are currently paying for major reno-
vations to the youth room, donated by
us several years ago," Phillips said.
While some gift shops work by
appointment, many have set hours,
often working around the times that
parents are waiting for their kids to
come out of synagogue classes and
events. But even during Sunday school
pick-up, gift shop shopping has to be
easier than braving the parking and
crowds at the mall.
