"The men are funny and so
engaging," said Katz, who loved
hanging out at the shop and lis-
tening to the stories the plumbers
would tell.
They waxed poetic about the
right kind of toilet paper to use. A
new technique to line pipes
brought tears to Jim Levine's eyes.
On the job, these big strong
guys — unfazed by the mess
inside — enter a house and talk
baby talk to the cats. After suc-
cessfully completing their work,
they might win a big kiss of
thanks from the woman who lives
there.
As mild mannered as Dan
looks, he loves the game of track-
ing customers down who don't
pay their bills, Katz said. One
woman finally answered her
phone after Dan made several
attempts to contact her.
"I'll catch you later," she told
him, and hung up.
"Dan found out she owned a
manicure salon and made an
appointment, under a pseudo-
nym, and requested her," Katz
said. "When the manicure was
done and it came time to pay,
Dan told her who he was and
said, 'Catch you later!"
The woman laughed and final-
ly paid him.
Dan says the film captures two
levels, one of the family and one
of the business.
"I'm thankful for the work my
father has put into this business,"
he said. "It's not an entitlement
to me, but more like an heirloom
that's my responsibility to protect
and share."
Regarding his former high-
powered job in New York, at the
end of the day, Dan said, there
was nothing rewarding about it.
"But here, my work is helping
my family and the people who
work here, who are also family —
some have been here longer than
I — and whose livelihoods
depend on me making wise
choices. My parents are really
honored that they've created a
place where their three sons want
to work and be. It's very reward-
ing to all of us." 0
