But do be afraid. Be very afraid
when it comes to how much you
might actually need. Education,
whether private or public, elementary
or graduate school, always takes a bite
out of the budget.
This year, it costs $5,100 to educate
each child in public school, Littmann
says. "That figure represents a 13 per-
cent increase from the previous year,
the first time the percentage has risen
by a double figure in a decade."
Tuition rose by 6 percent last year at
private colleges, bringing the typical
tuition (including room and board) to
$27,516 for just one year.
"Before you send your child off to
college, do the research," Littmann
advises. "Find the best school you can,
considering your budget limitations."
Another idea is to look at community
colleges, which are more affordable.
Make certain when you apply that these
schools have transferable credits, so
that if your child decides to go to a
university later, what he learned at the
community college will carry through.

College is not an absolute necessity,
Littmann says, "but [billionaire
Microsoft founder] Bill Gates [a
Harvard dropout] is 1/10 of 1 percent
of the population; in other words, he's
almost invisible."
The fact is, most employers are
looking to hire college graduates.
"But keep in mind that they're not
just looking for someone who got
good grades at a university," Littmann
says. "They're looking for enthusiasm
on the job, as well. That's really what
corporate America wants."
