Mom doesn't seem
like herself lately.,,

Since mom moved to Heritage
at Southfield's retirement
community she just doesn't
seem like herself. She's laughing
more, she's always busy and she
has a bounce in her step.

only going to get worse," but blames
Israel.
"There is a removal of the constraints
on evil, oppression and domination. No
Israeli politician feels any constraints on
what they can do to the Palestinians."
Kuttab feels Israeli closures, curfews,
checkpoints and the security barrier are
not driven by Israeli security needs but
rather by "a much worse form of
apartheid than was ever found in South
Africa."
He predicted that Israel will make the
separation barrier permanent and will
eventually build walls around Israeli-
Arab towns and villages. 'An almost
inevitable next step is ethnic cleansing,"
he told the audience.
Kuttab sees American support for
Israel as a major barrier. Israel has "peo-
ple inside the congressional offices," he
said. "They simply lift the phone and
dictate to these people what they will
do."
During the question-and-answer peri-
od, an audience member who claimed
"the media in America is controlled by
Jewish lobbyists" went unchallenged as
did another who charged that "Israel
had something to do with the 9-11
attacks." Asked later, Kuttab said he
didn't believe Israel was behind 9-11,
but didn't correct the statement because
"I don't think there is any need."
Allan Gale, associate director of the
Jewish Community
Council of
Metropolitan Detroit,
was troubled by
reports of the pro-
gram.
"Some of these pro-
grams previously have
been in churches that
Gale
are Arab-American
and left-leaning
strongholds, and the church in
Birmingham wasn't one of them," Gale
said. "This is an indication that the
anti-Israel message is spreading. This is
a church in Oakland County near the
Jewish community that was holding a
program that had no balance."
Gale said steps are being taken. The
JCCouncil is in continuing consulta-
tion with the Anti-Defamation League
and with the American Jewish
Committee, which is dialoguing with
some of these churches.
"In some sense, all the efforts by
Israel during the past 56 years to find a
solution and make peace with its neigh-
bors have made no difference," said
Gale regretfully. "We are back to a
Palestinian community that won't
accept Jewish sovereignty in the Middle
East." ❑

Isn't that great?!!
