Teacher and oft-time artist Alva Dworkin of Southfield displays some of her
Yiddish-based artwork at the Yiddish Yes! festival.

Spanish, mostly known as Ladino or
Judezmo.
What makes these Jewish is the fact
that they arose within Jewish communi-
ties as a form of communication among
Jews, and their written form is rendered
in Hebrew characters. All incorporate
large percentages of Hebrew vocabulary.
Yiddish seems to have developed in
the 10th century when Jews from
France and northern Italy settled in the
Rhineland (today, western Germany),

where the spoken language was Middle
High German.
The Judeo-German that arose in -
Jewish communities underwent further
modifications as Jews in the 1300s and
1400s migrated eastward into Slavic-
speaking lands. The vocabulary and
grammar of Yiddish absorbed and
assimilated Slavonic elements and grad-
ually developed into the form of Yiddish
with which we are familiar today. ❑
