said. "People don't th ink there's
much more to know about it other
than it's usser [forbi dden]. The most
vocal opponents are the least likely
to have done any re ading or rea-
soned investigation on the topic.
Their goal is not t be current and
informed, open an d responsive —
but to be right."
Cherrin said, "Those of us who see
the Torah as a blueprint for bringing
kedushah [holiness] into our lives
experience moral tension where oth-
ers don't. For many, there are going
to be questions of dual allegiances,"
he said.
"It is clear th at Jewish Law,
Judaism, states marriage is between a
man and a wo man," said Rabbi Alon
Tolwin, execu tive director of Aish
Detroit in So uthfield. "God's plan
for the world included giving us
humans the responsibility for procre-
ating."
Rabbi Tolwin concedes the options
of "artificial means of pregnancy and
adoption that enable some to say
that the natural male or female
union is no longer necessary for a
child." But he stands by his belief
that children need both a mother
and a father.
"Immorality, selfishness, indul-
gence and experimentation are not
working," he said. "Children today
are more disoriented, more angry
and more confused than in any time
before.
"Why take the chance. We must
protect our children from experi-
mental lifestyles that may produce
emotional cripples."

A Slippery Slope?

Che rrin, however, said, "No one will
be endorsing sexual acts between
ma les by voting against Proposal 2.
T hey can still legitimately hold their
m oral viewpoint and uphold the
C onstitution," he said.
He sees it as a mistake to see the
roposal as a "slippery slope to
mmorality."
"To me, success as a Jew doesn't
mean I need an America that com-
plies with Torah values," Cherrin
said. "Success as a Jew has to do
with my own free will, and it is
America's job to protect my choices.

The Constitution is a document of
possibility that protects everyone
equally. Success as an American
means I ensure that the Constitution
is not abused."
Wolf sees it as a prejudiced initia-
tive against a minority.
"It may deny permanently rights
to gays and other unmarried couples
in such matters as child custody,
inheritance, hospital visitation
rights, health care, critical care deci-
sions for partners. As Jews, we know
all about being a minority subjected
to discrimination. We, as Jews, have
an obligation to stand up and
oppose discrimination in all of its
facets. We need to insist on fair
treatment."
Rabbi Silberberg, however, said,
"To vote for this proposal is not to
reject certain people.
"While in Judaism it is important
to be tolerant of all people regardless
of their action, to vote against this
sends the message that is acceptable
and you are voting for an improper
union."
Eric Rosenberg of Farmington
Hills, who supports passage of
Proposal 2, said: "I'm of the old-
fashioned belief that the definition
of marriage is one man and one
woman. It isn't two men. It isn't two
women. It isn't a father and daugh-
ter, a mother and son. It isn't two
siblings."
He disagreed with a recent JN let-
ter in which 25 rabbis called Pro-
posal 2 "a bigoted, hateful attempt
to permanently enshrine discrimina-
tion in the Michigan Constitution."
"Neither I nor the many people I
know who support the amendment
are in any way driven by hate. I am
absolutely opposed to any kind of
economic, employment, residential
or similar type of discrimination
against people without regard to
their sexual identity."
With no religious reasons behind
his views, Rosenberg said, "I am
highly secular. I am not coming
from a religious perspective. I speak
only from me."
Rosenberg said both he and his
wife will be voting for President
George W. Bush on Tuesday. "But
we will be cancelling each other out
on Proposal 2," he said. 0
