covering it with rapidity, so with more
room needed, Lori has plans to put
additional seating upstairs where
many, many years ago, pulleys raised
up buggies to be painted.
People are reminded that a connec-
tion exists between a firefighter and
her dream by the artifacts on walls like
a firefighter emblem, hard hat, etc.
A lovely little restaurant, very gra-
cious hostess, excellent food and serv-
ice, a delightful ambiance of Tiffany-
style lampshades, wooden tables,
white linen napkins, rustic beams, etc.
... This is Franklin Grill ... a charming
dining discovery.
THERE IS NOW An interesting
taste experience many may have heard
about but never enjoyed ... Finally
open is the eagerly-awaited Yossi's
Israeli Cuisine on the northeast sector
of Robins Nest, Orchard Lake Road,
north of 14 Mile in West Bloomfield
... It is the former locale of Cedars, a
few doors away from the former La
Difference kosher restaurant.
Seating presently is only for about
55, at tables and counter, with owner
Yossi Benjamin cooking the authentic
favorites that he featured at his former
restaurant in Israel ... Yossi's falafel,
lightly deep-fried in low-fat canola oil,
and with no grease, is possibly among
the best outside of Israel ... Same for
his baba ganoush ... And the chicken,
shwarma and beef kabobs do not have
many equals in this region.
MEMORIES ... From Al and
Bernice Kesner, now living in Las
Vegas ... "We too remember our
grandmothers and their cooking. Like
when after our forshpeiz (appetizers)
of kishke, gribenes, helzl, chicken fric-
assee and knishes, would come the
main course of either boiled chicken,
flanken, kackletten (hockfleish or
chopped meat) and sometimes rib
steaks which were served either well
done, burned or cremated.
Occasionally, we had barbecued liver
done to a burned and hardened per-
fection in our own coal furnace.
"Beverages consisted of cheap pop
(seltzer in spritz bottles) or a glezel tay
(glass of tea) served in collected
yahrtzeit glasses and sucked through a
sugar cube held between the incisors.
Desserts were probably the only things
not made with shmaltz, so to go with
tea we had honey cake or sponge cake
and flummen (cooked prunes)."
THREE OF THE four "Where to
Eat" places hereabouts chosen in this '
month's Gourmet magazine, are legiti-
mate dining spots ... The other, New
Yasmeen Bakery in Dearborn, is main-
ly a bakery, plus market, carryout and

convenience cafe ... The others listed
are all true restaurants ... Bacco on
Northwestern in Southfield, Cuisine
on Lothrop in Detroit and Christine's
Cuisine on E. Nine Mile in Ferndale.
WHAT A TERRIFIC idea ... and
so Gary Cochran and his Beau Jack's
on Maple west of Telegraph in
Bloomfield Township is the first
restaurant in Michigan to have the
low-carb alternate of fresh mashed
cauliflower instead of potatoes ... It's
delicious with hints of garlic, scallion
and cheddar cheese.
CONGRATS ... To Scott Raskin,
president of computer giant Telelogic
Americas and Asia/Pacific, on his 43rd
birthday ... To Laurie Groskind on her
birthday, celebrated with table of 11
girls at Sposita's Restaurant in West
Bloomfield ... To Marilyn and Bernie_
Harwood on their 50th anniversary,
feted with friends at Clawson Steak
House.
ENOUGH MONEY TO provide
16,000 meals for Food Bank of
Oakland County to feed the needy
was raised through West Bloomfield
Chamber's recent Grub Crawlers
restaurant-tasting evening.
MAIL DEPT. ... From Barrister
Stanley Rosenberg in Miami ...
"Florida residents had no need to
build sukkot for the recent holiday
because three hurricanes turned their
homes into open-roofed booths. All
they had to do was bring in the food
and serve dinner alfresco.
"Florida is changing. Gone is
Burdine's, the Florida Store, Carson's
Steak House in Boca Raton, the Mall
at 163rd Street in North Miami. New
is the Capitol Grille at the Sunrise
Mall in Fort Lauderdale. Delray Beach
has a new Mexican restaurant on
Atlantic called La Bamba, and the
Boca Town Center, which is Twelve
Oaks revisited, has Kate Spade from
New York, where you can buy a wallet
for $250 or more."
From Carol Mann ... "One of our
absolutely favorite restaurants has
closed. What has happened to Cafe
Venezia at Middlebelt and 11 Mile in
Farmington Hills? The spedini was the
best in town, and the menu had won-
derful items reasonably priced." .
DON'T TOSS AWAY your empty
toilet paper rolls ... Send them to
Heidi Martin, Jewish News account
executive ... She's collecting them to
feed her gourmet gerbils and their
oddball eating selections ... It's their
favorite food. ❑
