Club-Metro Detroit, a free, non-residential
cancer support community based in Royal
Oak. The club enables people of all ages
and with all types of cancer to join with
family andfriends in enhancing their
quality of life through social and emotional
support, networking and education. The
club is named for the late comedienne and
former Detroiter Gilda Radner, who died
of ovarian cancer in 1989. Gallon, 73,
and his wife, Gail, are affiliated with the
Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.

How long have you been active in
Gilda's Club?
"Since the death of my former wife,
Bernice, in September 1994. She was
first diagnosed eight years earlier. She
had been a social worker and therapist
and wanted to make a difference in the
lives of people living with cancer. She
mobilized the group of eight women
who brought the idea of Gildas Club-

Why did you get
involved?
"Before she died,
Bernice asked me to
continue her work with
Gilda's Club, to nurture
its development, and to
strive to ensure its
future. I have been on
the board since the year
of her death in 1994."

What is the outlook
for Gilda's Club?
"There are more than
300 types of cancer.
While research and
treatment are pro-
longing life expectan-
cies, there are no
cures for cancer. Thus
more people are living
with the disease.
Because cancer affects the whole family,
Gilda's Club is meaningful to every fam-
ily member."

How large is the club
now?
"There are 18 chapters and 25,000
members in North America. Locally, 27
percent of the 3,800 members are men;
343 members are youth age

Dear
Bar
ave
an "apple"
shape. What
can I do
about it and
does it matter in terms of my
health? Thanks, S. T.

A

nswer: Dear S. T., I
previously mentioned
that cortisol is a ste-
roid hormone in the body. It
increases under stress, after
injury, or during an infection.

Daily tensions/stress can
elevate your cortisol levels,
leading to an increased appe-
tite and abdominal fat.

Don't let stress continue to
give you that apple shape.
Your high waist to hip ratio is
probably due to the location
of excess body fat and recent
weight gain. Unfortunately,
a high Body Mass Index
(weight-to-height ratio)
4- can be associated with
impaired health.

Some Quick tips:
• Replace mediocre
eating practices with
great ones.
• You don't have to
change everything at
once, but do change
something.
• Take time for yourself
away from your life
stressors – honor yourself with
time well spent.
• Be action oriented, not pas-
sive – you can do it!
