New York, where, in addition to per-
forming, he played bass and sang
with the rock band Synthetic 16. He
also spent time as a cast member in
the interactive Off-Broadway hit

Tony n' Tina's Wedding.
"When I first started, I was part of
the Black family, which runs the
catering hall," Gutman says of his
time with Tony n' Tina. "Only one of
the actors in the family was actually
an Italian Catholic. Five out of six of
us were Jewish."
Gutman, 27, intends to use
Detroit as a base to seek new oppor-
tunities to advance his career.
"I'm very excited to get back and
dive into whatever excites me," he
says, explaining that after some soul-
searching, he's making some changes
after concluding "my heart is still in
theater."
"I'm looking for. some new options
on the East Coast, including New
York, as well as Chicago and regional
theater in Detroit. I am also consid-
ering going back to school to get a
master's in theater arts or directing in
order to teach at the university
level."
Gutman speaks highly of the train-
ing he received in the theater depart-
ment at Western Michigan
University in Kalamazoo, which is
considered one of the top undergrad-
uate theater training programs in the
United States. "I can't tell you how
much I learned in college. I would
love to give back what I learned at
Western.
"I haven't been back to Detroit for
a while," says Gutman, who looks
forward to being with family as well
as revisiting the area.
He is the son of Howard and
Karen Gutman of Farmington Hills.
Gutman will continue to appear
around the country with Forbidden
Broadway, which he enthusiastically
recommends.
"The road show is primarily the
greatest hits of what has happened in
New York during the past 20 years,"
he says. "It includes snippets of
shows that everyone is familiar with.
It is very entertaining and a lot of
fun." ❑
