"Oakland County needs to Zack maintain its high level of services without raising taxes during a challenging and unpre- dictable economic climate. We need to ensure that county government spends money wisely and not wastefully," says Helaine M. Zack, the county commis- sion Democratic caucus chair. District 22 includes Huntington Woods, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak Township and the south- east corner of Southfield. Zack's Republican opponent, Jideofor N. Dallah of Oak Park, did not respond to a Jewish News questionnaire. "I want to ensure that there is a fair allocation of county resources given to the older communities of south Oakland County," said Zack, 51, a district resident for 24 years. "Our pri- orities in this district, including fixing our aging infrastructure, contrast with those of north and west Oakland County, including developing new roads or sewers." On keeping district communities safe and strong, she said: "We need to have adequate resources to maintain high-quality public safety depart- ments. Since 9-11, the county has invested a lot of time and money in emergency response and homeland security efforts, including purchasing four hazardous materials vehicles. We also need greater emphasis placed on roads and traffic signals to keep the 22nd District safe." First elected in 2002, Zack said she strives to be accessible to constituents. coki trtsirvom 5701 Pennsylvania Ave • Lansing 1.800.539.8748 lexusoilansing.com OPEN MONDAY 9am-9pm NOTHING. 898360 The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) will present an informational meeting with Senor Dan Senor, former chief spokesperson for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and sen- ior adviser to Ambassador L. Paul "And I've responded to concerns they have raised regarding traffic signals and community home improve- ment issues," the Huntington Woods resi- dent said. As a Democratic leader, Zack said, "I have been able to unify our caucus and build alliances with commissioners from the other political party." Zack serves on the commission's finance, public services and oversight committees and the new jail over- crowding task force. She said she takes on politically risky battles, such as protesting a commissioner's appoint-. ment to a county job, which would have forced a special election. "I also opposed a controversial $48,000 board of commissioners lobbyist contract," she said. Zack and her husband, Andrew, have three adult children. The family is affiliated with Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park. Zack works as a social worker in employee assistance programs. She earned a B.A. and an MSW at the University of Michigan. She has been active with Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Women's Division. She's on the board of the Oakland County Human Services Coordinating Council, Oakland County Substance Abuse Advisory Council and Citizens Advisory Council/Oakland County Community and Home Improvement. She's an alternate board member to SEMCOG and the Area Agency on Aging and a member of the Oakland County Jail Diversion Advisory Team. County commissioners are paid $30,618 a year.
