Traverse City, donated land to build
a synagogue. The lot selected was
behind the Park Place Hotel. Fund-
raising was begun and the original
ledger can be seen in the exhibition.
The synagogue was built as a two-
story gable and clapboard structure
to house an Orthodox congregation.
Beth El congregants have shared
personal family histories by loaning
artifacts commemorating Jewish fam-
ily life. Emmy Lou Cholak has many
items that have been passed down
through her family for 150 years,
including a challah cover embroi-
dered by her great-grandmothers as
well as wood figurines of a Jewish
couple hand carved in Germany and
a silver spice box used during
Havdalah, both 100 years old.
Terry Tarnow shares a small prayer
book brought from Latvia in the late
1800s. It, has an ivory and gold cover
and is written in English and
Hebrew.
A reception will take place 2-4
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Grand
Traverse Heritage Center on Sixth
Street. The synagogue will be open to
public for tours from 2-3 p.m. on
that same day.
The Grand Traverse Heritage
Center is open Tuesday-Friday 10-4
and Saturday 12-4. For information
on the exhibit, call the museum,
