Left: Elaine Greenberg entertains at Justfor You. "Rabbi Paul Yedwab told me, 'This isn't a death sentence,' and Rabbi Harold Loss said, 'If we lose our sense of humor, then they win,'" quoted Greenberg. "So I went into the hospital with a smile on my face, saying, 'I'm going to beat this thing'." Despite her positive attitude, Greenberg was devastated when she learned cancer had spread to her diaphragm and she would never be able to sing professionally again. "That was worse than losing my hair," she said. But the dire predictions were untrue, and Greenberg was overjoyed to keep her beautiful voice. "I knew then that singing would play a big role in my cancer journey," she said. Greenberg, who lives in Farmington Hills with her husband, Shelly, is now a frequent performer and speaker at cancer centers and community events, and has recorded two CDs, one musical and one moti- vational. "I handle my cancer by living my life," said Greenberg. "What's impor- tant is to stop rushing through [life] and enjoy every single minute." At Just for You, breast cancer sur- vivor Eileen Leider of Oak Park said, "I'm here to learn. So much has developed in the last seven years since I was diagnosed. Back then, my to only support group was my husband, who died two years ago from prostate cancer. When I come to a program like this, I feel like I've found my home." Susan Henkin of Ann Arbor, who is Mrs. Charach's niece, had surgery last year for breast cancer. "It's nice to come here and share with other women in similar situations," said Henkin. "Natalie and Manny are incredible. They put so much energy into helping people. I'm fortunate to have them in my corner. I'm count- ing my blessings." For the Charachs, there is a bene- fit, too. "We get the thrill of know- ing that people who need it are get- ting the benefit of what we're offer- ing," said Manny. ❑ Resources • Charach Cancer Treatment Center, Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, (248) 937-5055 • Gilda's Club, (248) 577-0800, www.giddasdubdetroit.org • Kathleen Hardy, Cancer Support and Counseling Services, Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit; Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center, Farmington Hills, (248) 538- 6507 khardy@dmc.org • Judy's WigWorks, (248) 705-2617 • American Cancer Society, (800) 227-2345 wvvw.cancer.org , iElEc Nit oRs. o lkor .F.1,1 1-KTIE • .1.1FRoil GET ok.E.
