preparations of Mexican specialties.
It is not a small place, seating 120 at
tables in two rooms, plus 12 more seats
at a full-service bar ... and open seven
days a week for both lunch and dinner
... with kitchen hours Sunday-Thursday,
11-10; Friday and Saturday, 11-11.
Ole Ole's connotation of also being a
Tex-Mex restaurant would seem to be
derived from its combination of
Northern Mexican peasant food with
Texas farm and cowboy fare ... Chili, for
example, was unknown in Mexico and
comes from the ample use of beef in
Texan cooking ... "Refried beans" are a
mistranslation of the Mexican dish fri-
joles refritos, which actually means well-
fried beans ... Even nachos are said to
first being served in Texas ... In fact,
there are steak houses all over the place
in Texas, and at Ole Ole, you can get a
20 oz. porterhouse, $16.95, or N.Y. strip
steak and shrimp, $14.95, etc., includ-
ing Mexican rice, baked potato or steak
fries, coleslaw or salad, vegetable, Texas
toast or tortillas.
There's also a good-stocked children's
menu for kids 10 and younger eating
for $2.99.
You'll like the prices at Ole Ole ... and
the food even better ... For that matter,
the only thing you might be mad about
is that you never knew of Ole Ole
before.
HE IS RECOGNIZED nationally for
his prowess in furthering the reputation
of fine dining in Michigan ... and has
left this area in a move to Charleston,
S.C.
Maitre d' Mickey Bakst is now the
dining room head of the four-star
Charleston Grill in the elegant
Charleston Hotel ... Charleston is home
to the oldest Jewish community in
America, as well as Beth Elohim, the
oldest Reform synagogue in continuous
use in the United States today ... found-
ed in 1749.
Mickey made his mark in Michigan
back in 1986, joining Chef Pete Petersen
at Tapawingo ... with the restaurant
becoming a leader in the dining world
for its stunning innovation in food.
People from all over metro Detroit
flocked to Ellsworth to be wined and
dined by the gregarious and warm
Mickey.
After being lured here, he and Chef
Takashi Yagihashi from Ambria in
Chicago created what many said was
one of the best restaurants Michigan had
ever seen ... Tribute, at the direction of
Mickey and with Yagihashi's extraordi-
nary food, set a standard for dining not
only hereabouts but in the nation.

IT'S ALWAYS SUCH a wonderful
affair that even a couple of folks who
were married just that day, miles away,
made sure to attend ... still in their
bridal garb ... They had tied the knot in
Ann Arbor, where guests were asked to
give their wedding gifts in the form of
donations to the National Kidney
Foundation of Michigan.
The event was the Sixth Annual Soiree
on the River to benefit NKF ... and
might have been the best one yet.
The food brought back memories of
when the Roostertail on Jefferson in
Detroit, where it was held, was a nitery
restaurant and served some mighty fine
vittles ... This one, catered by the
Schoenith family's Roostertail, had sta-
tions of delicious roast beef, trout,
spaghetti, sushi, etc. ... and also included
the always elegant and tasty chocolate
fountain donated by Vineyards in
Southfield.
About 400 were on hand for the
sumptuous dining, open bar, dancing,
silent and live auctions and a lot of
friendly conviviality ... The two auctions
had gifts that seemed to outdo those of
the group's previous fine events ... The
live bidding was conducted by sports-
caster-author Eli Zaret, turned auction-
eer for the evening.
Untold amount of credit for some
great hard work by co-chair folks, Mida
Giragosian, founder, and Ann Duke of
Hour magazine ... with their excellent
executive committee of 12 conscientious
folks among numerous more volunteers.
From a little event six years ago, start-
ed by Mida, the Soiree on the River by
National Kidney Foundation of
Michigan has grown into a much-
looked-for affair.
CONGRATS ... To Dr. Sam
Scheinfield on his 60th birthday ... cele-
brated with excellent goodies at the fine
Tapawingo restaurant in Ellsworth...
with wife, Dena, and friends Dr.
Michael and Janice Salter and Jeff and
Barbara Olstein ... To Michael
Kuchersky, owner of the Fiddler and
Sunrise restaurants, on his 60th birthday
... celebrated at his Fiddler banquet
room in West Bloomfield ... To Jan and
Boris Shain on their 32nd anniversary.
CULINARY CLIPS ... Dean
Hachem, Sheik owner, and Koji
Watanabe, bossman at Musachi in
Southfield, will combine to open a
Japanese restaurant across from Online
Cafe in the McNamara Terminal of
Detroit Metro Airport ... Artie Oliverio
is the new owner of Picasso's Pizza carry-
out on 12 Mile in Southfield. ❑
