Ask The Orthodontist Blaze! Tovl "Staying Cavity-Free While In Braces" One of the most common concerns for both parents and orthodontists is keeping the teeth cavity-free while in braces and allowing for no staining or cavities after the braces are removed. Those who wear the non-removable orthodontic appliances known as braces, must guard against decay springing up around the edges of brackets and bands by paying meticulous Nelson Hersh DDS, MS attention to oral hygiene. Aside from rinsing, flossing and Licensed Specialist brushing after meals, patients also have the option of applying a prescription gel or mouth rinse to their teeth as a means of preventing decay or decalcification. Some orthodontists (myself included) utilize cements or adhesives that have a fluoride releasing element. This may assist in preventing decay and although no materials can overcome poor dental hygiene, it is my belief that anything we can do to assist in obtaining the best possible result is beneficial. Many orthodontists spend additional time reviewing oral hygiene with the patient at the appliance placement appointment. A "goody" bag with numerous helpful devices to assist in good oral hygiene is included, such as travel toothbrushes, special floss, inter-dental mini-brushes, etc. Our office even has a dental hygienist on staff to help with information. Electric toothbrushes may also prove helpful. In general, excellent orthodontic treatment can only be obtained with cooperative and informed patients. Once orthodontic therapy begins, the patient will be expected to continue to see the family dentist for regular checkups, dental cleanings and routine care. Routine dental care will help ensure the best results from orthodontic therapy. For more information you may call our office at 248-926-4100 at our new location on Haggerty Rd. in West Bloomfield.
