COMING TO THE PALACE OF AUBURN HILLS STREET OF DREAMS from page 73 SATURDA OCTOBER 23 S It o IN shocked to see him dancing in his underwear in the original 1975 pro- duction of Chicago. Take a look at Rex Harrison criti- cizing the orchestra at a 1956 dress rehearsal of My Fair Lady, and a stiff but game Ed Sullivan being fes- tooned with garlands by the cast of Hair, back in 1970. Broadway has its serious side as well. We see homemade videos of Jonathan Larson clowning around on his last day as a waiter. He left that job to stage his new musical Rent, which went on to win the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. But Larson wasn't there; he died of an aneurysm less than a month before the show opened. A ONE LAST TIME! mwt.NNTAt, ONENIGHT 38 310,:i SM. 2 IA SUM gCk'i HITS. Steven Sondheim seems to dominate the final two episodes. Because of his association with Oscar Hammerstein II and Leonard Bernstein (not to mention the plethora of musicals he wrote on his own), he can be seen in every stage of his development, from an apple- cheeked youngster to a grizzled vet- eran. Introducing and summing up each episode is a serious and well-modu- lated Julie Andrews, cutting a very different figure than she did in her own fresh-faced youth. ❑ "EXTRAORDINARY!" -THE NEW YORKER "ENORMOUSLY ENTERTAINIt -NEW YORK TIMES "SASSY, BRASSY MIDLER IS AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE" More About `Broadway .CH WAG() SUN TIMES If the images of Broadway: The American Musical whet your appetite, here are a few add-ons from the series.
