doubled from $17 billion in 1994 to
a projected $34.3 billion in 2004.
That makes the pet industry 60
percent larger than the toy industry
($20 billion) and 33 percent larger
than the candy industry ($24 bil-
lion). The APPMA projects $8.3 bil-
lion will be spent this year for veteri-
nary care.
Todd Sachse, of Broder and Sachse
in Farmington Hills, built the OVRS
facility. He credits Dr. Henney for
bringing Marshfield Clinic
Laboratories in as a tenant to per-
form lab services. Marshfield, a
Wisconsin-based firm, leased 2,100

square feet of the hospital, which
helps pay the bills.
But Dr. Henney is in this for more
than just the money. She has a devo-
tion to her patients, which does not
go unrecognized. Joanee Hurwitz of
Bloomfield Hills is one of her clients.
"My pet is like my child," says
Hurwitz of her 8-year-old yellow
Labrador, Mikey.
"The dog I purchased from a
breeder was born without a hip sock-
et. He was diagnosed when he was 6
months old. I didn't know about his
problem until I was already in love
with him," Hurwitz says.
