JET's show goes on;
mold not dangerous.'

he opening this week of the
Jewish Ensemble Theatre's
new season featuring I'm Not
Rappaport will not be affected by the
mold problem discovered beneath its
stage in the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
"We anticipate the JET schedule
to precede as
planned," said
Suzanne Lichtman,
JCC marketing
director.
The JET's artistic
director, Evelyn
Orbach, said the
problem doesn't pose
a health danger.

missioned an air
quality study in September,
Lichtman said. It found minute par-
ticles of common allergens and rec-
ommended a course of action that
includes ventilation and measures to
keep the space dry until restoration .
and remediation are completed.
Lichtman said the JCC is currently
instituting recommendations from
the study.
"We were worried until we saw the
report by an independent company
to test the problem," said Orbach,
who, along with her actors, feared
they would be unable to open the
play this week. "At some point, the
theater has to be excavated and
cleaned up thoroughly."
Now the JCC may let them go the
whole season, which ends June
2005, Orbach said.
The problem first was discovered
after a flood a year ago when the
actors smelled mildew back stage
and the stage began to buckle,
Orbach said. "It seemed to dry up,
but evidently it didn't."
The ensemble needed new carpet-
ing and the stage rebuilt, which had-
n't been done in more than 13 years,
Orbach said. "While inspecting for
this, we learned of the problem
under the whole theater, not just the
stage," she said. "But it's not danger-
ous."
The problem has not spread to
anywhere else in the JCC, Lichtman
said. ❑
