Apple kringle is a favorite.
Kringle For Chanukah?
My late Aunt Beverly Levin of
Milwaukee always had at least a
dozen or so Racine kringle in her
freezer. She was famous for them —
almost as famous as the Racine
Danish bakery that produces them.
At family gatherings at Aunt
Beverly's house you could count on
the kringle, which she would
announce in her operatic voice with
the fanfare of an elaborate ice sculp-
ture at a midnight cruise buffet.
They deserved some attention,
these round, flat rings of pastry
topped with white icing and filled
with sweet cheese or raspberry or
cinnamon and nuts. If you took just
a small slice, you felt justified in
tasting all the flavors.
When my cousin Ellen married
her husband, Jess Levin, president of
Racine's Bank of Elmwood, my aunt
gained a direct line from the bakery
to her home.
But now anyone can enjoy Racine
Danish Kringle because the bakery
now ships it nationwide. More than
20 flavors are available and they are
certified dairy kosher. Might be a
nice option to serve for brunch or
dessert for the upcoming holiday.
One kringle can serve 12. Kringles
are sent by second-day air at $21.50
for one; $29.50 for two; $39.50 for
three. For more information, call

Tell them my Aunt Beverly sent
you.

Wedding of Roberta \Nine
London, 1969
Statistics abounded Monday eve-
ning, Oct. 11, at the 14th annual
Yad Ezra dinner, held at Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
Ruth Kahn, president of the
Berkley-based kosher food bank, and
others cited the following:
• 250 — the number of families
served monthly when Yad Ezra start-
ed in 1990.
• 1,100 — the number of families
served monthly today.
• 40 — applications from new
families in process.
• 60 — number of pounds of food
received from Yad Ezra by the aver-
age family each month. In addition,
families also receive toiletries and
occasionally cleaning supplies.
• 750,000 — number of pounds
of kosher food Yad Ezra expects to
distribute this year.
• 11 — percentage of U.S. house-
holds who are "food insecure," or
don't have enough resources to plan
the next day's meals, according to
Yad Ezra guest speaker Dan
Glickman, former secretary of agri-
culture in the Clinton administra-
tion.
• 1 — Yad Ezra volunteer of the
year Dotty Smith, part of Yad Ezra's
"Monday Group" of weekly volun-
teers since 1991.
• 125 — the number of regular
weekly volunteers at Yad Ezra.
