As a vice president at Beth Israel
Congregation in Ann Arbor, Harvey
Berman has had to walk past pro-
Palestinian protesters since September
2003, when the group began regular
Saturday morning picketing there. Along
with his wife, Shelly Kovacs Berman,
Harvey's counter-protest has been to create
a blue and white pin with a Jewish star
printed between the words, "Support
Israel-Support Peace."

Why not just confront the protesters?
"I don't agree or accept or like what
they're doing, but I don't want to argue
with them or even engage in conversa-
tion with them. But I can't ignore
them. The alternative was to make a
statement. Their presence [at shul] is
antagonistic and offensive. I wanted to
do something that would help people
from feeling frustrated or intimidated
when they walked past them. The pins
are a non-violent, non-confrontational
route for expressing how they feel."

How did you come up with the
design?
"Most Jews support peace and sup-
port Israel, so putting that message on
the pins seemed to be something that
would be acceptable by the entire
Jewish community. Some may disagree
on how to get peace, but most want it."

How did you institute your plan?

"Once we decided on a message, we
ran it by Jeff Levin [Jewish Federation
of Washtenaw County executive direc-
tor]. He was our sounding board and
also responsible for the design of the
pins and the technical details, like
where to buy them."

How have you been circulating 2,000
pins?
"We started by placing a basket of
them on a table at Beth Israel on Rosh
Hashanah. We also made 500 available
to Temple Beth Emeth and gave them
to the Jewish Community Center [of
Washtenaw County] and [University of
Michigan] Hillel. They are intended to
be worn in public places."

How do you feel when you're wearing
one?
"Walking past the protesters with

their signs that say, "Zionism Equals
Nazism," is especially frustrating for me
as the son of Holocaust survivors. I had
a whole new feeling going into shul
when I had a pin on. I'm glad to show
that even individuals can make a differ-
ence. With the pins, people can walk
by holding their heads a lot higher,
knowing they are making a statement
in a peaceful manner." ❑
