GOOD HOSTESS DEPT...
Renee Guerreso, evening greeter at
Angelo's Bistro in West Bloomfield's
Sugar Tree ... Pleasant, gracious and
smiling as she seats people ... This
combination goes a long way in mak-
ing a good meal taste even better.
"MAGGIANO'S IS MIGHTY
fine," says Sy Manello of the Jewish
News, who attended with his wife,
Pearl, the recent grand opening of the
restaurant in Troy.
"The decor is warm and 'old-fash-
ioned' with lots of wood, dark leather
banquettes, tables with red and white
checked cloths, high ceilings and low
light. It was rather noisy with a huge
crowd at the opening, and we think
that the noise level might need to be
addressed. There was an abundant
waitstaff, which seemed well-informed,
helpful (eager to explain dishes and see
to it that diet restrictions would be
accommodated) and really able to hus-
tle.
"Some of the recommended items
that we had were: stuffed mushrooms
(spinach inside with light bread-crumb
topping), crispy onion strings (thin
and not greasy), shell pasta with roast-
ed vegetables, chicken piccata-style
(very light and flavorful), salmon on a
bed of spinach (baked, moist, with a
light crumb-and-herb topping).
"Normally, there would be an oppor-
tunity to 'box up' the leftovers (the
abundant portions would see to it that
there was food left over), but this
night, all uneaten portions were donat-
ed to homeless shelters. Nice move."
Maggiano's Little Italy is at 2089 W

WHO'S WHERE DEPT ... The
Simone band will play Top 40 tunes

Martini on Hamilton in Birmingham

NOW HE CAN play golf all he
wants without getting up in the morn-
ing ... in the realization of another
dream.
Al Nettle's first was to become a bar-
ber-hair stylist, which he attained 52
years ago ... and followed up with
stints in the area at his brother Bob's
shop in Hazel Park, North Park
Towers, Charterhouse on the

Boardwalk and, finally, Clippers in
Applegate Square.
He shot 90 on the golf courses 52
years ago ... and today still hits 90 ... as
he retires and moves with wife of 49
years, Joy, to Ridge Manor, Fla., about
35 miles from Tampa ... Joy is glad to
have him morning, noon and night
again ... She says he is a good golf part-
ner.
They're already doing their thing at
the Whispering Oaks Country Club ...
while daughter Kathy Anderson, whose
gals do those terrific cleanups at local
offices, takes over dad's tradition ... She
is in training now at Clippers,
Northwestern and Inkster, in
Southfield, to also become a barber-
hair stylist, just like dad.
THEY MADE AN imposing quartet
in their tuxedoes, playing a lot of
music for the many folks who listened
and danced with enjoyment.
But now, the sole immediate family
member still hereabouts is the father
and grandfather ... Billy Rose is the
only one not living in Las Vegas.
Son Gary, guitar and vocals, is now a
blackjack dealer and dice game croupi-
er on two shifts at the Luxor and New
York, New York ... Son Tony, bass,
divides his time between Como's
restaurant there and his duo at Vegas'
Hard Rock Hotel ... Son Chris, drums
and cymbals, is a blackjack dealer at
the Orleans ... Grandson Ryan Rose,
plays regular jobs at the Luxor,
Stratosphere, Flamingo, New York,
New York, etc.
Billy's quartet today is still a very
good one, playing various restaurants
and niteries around town plus numer-
ous private parties ... with nephew
Vince Vidah, piano; Andy Allup, bass
and guitar; and Dan Hill, drums.

WHILE HERE RECENTLY,

dancemaster Joe Cornell recalled one
of his favorite memories ... about the
fellow who played piano and sang at
the Detroit piano bar of the former
Fort Wayne Hotel on Temple and Cass
... After a party there by City of Hope,
catered by kosher caterer Al Rosenberg,
Joe was invited to emcee the show by
its president, Helen Rosenberg, whom
he had met on a rainy day at
Greenbush Inn, north of Traverse City,
where Joe was social director.
The lounge piano player and singer
who now is also Joe's good friend in
California, went on to become a talk
show legend ... and today, as an entre-
preneur and developer, Mery Griffin is
one of Hollywood's wealthiest men. ❑
