The future director tried acting but
discovered he wasn't very good at it. He
and a friend, Julie Cohen, performed in
a cabaret review he directed called

KatatonicKaberet.
His NYU classmate Tony Kushner
(the future playwright of Angels in
America) saw it and asked him to serve
as assistant director on a play he was
putting on.
Then Cohen, who'd made a lot of
money doing voice-over work, asked
him to direct a play she financed.
Another actor/producer, a member of a
wealthy family, asked him to direct still
another play, Cloud 9.
"I did a superb job," Mayer admitted.
"I got a lot of attention on that one."
From there, it has been pretty much
uphill in a widely varied career that has
careened from musicals to drama to
revivals — and earned Mayer three Tony
nominations. Up next for the director is
a Broadway revival of Marsha Norman's
Pulitzer Prize-winning play, 'night,
Mother, starring Edie Falco and Brenda
Blethyn and opening in November.
And he won't read the reviews. "I
don't care if my work is loved or hated,"
he said. "I just want a passionate
response."
Mayer enjoys directing road shows of
his Broadway productions "because you
really do get to bring your work to so
many people who might otherwise miss
it. The challenges are that I can't be there
all the time, and the company does find
new things.
"Sometimes they are great, and some-
times I need to pull them back in to
what we were doing before. Our rehears-
al process [for Millie] was really enjoy-
able, and everyone is certainly on the
same page. They are a great group of
lovely, wildly talented people, and I do
miss them. So when I get the chance to
see them, I look forward to it."
He's especially pleased with Darcie
Roberts, the touring Millie. "Darcie is
doing a superb job. We could not have
done better. I love her performance, and
it is one of the greatest joys for me when
I do come and see the tour — I get to
watch Darcie play Millie again." 0
