THE IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL planned the highly successful Miracle Mission IV and this past summer's teen mission, both Jewish Federation-spon- sored events. I am confident that we have turned a corner, and that Detroit Jews are returning to Israel in significant numbers. Relationships Intifada II has damaged local relation- ships with other ethnic and religious groups. To our dismay, we heard some leaders of the local Arab American com- munity attempt to justify the terrorism. On several occasions, we saw anti-Israel demonstrations by Arab organizations on nearby college campuses and at major intersections in our own commu- nities. Clearly, cooperation between the Jewish and Arab American communities has been greatly handicapped by the intifada. Some local churches have focused their "peace" advocacy on the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Instead of treating the Palestinians as the true obstacles to peace, they see them as victims of Israeli aggression. Just in the past few months, churches have hosted a replica of "the Wall" and a hunger strike in sympathy with Palestinian prisoners. While the intifada has complicated our relationship with the local daily newspapers, I believe that a combination of our effective advocacy and the lessons of 9-11 have significantly reduced the incidence of one-sided news articles and editorials. Nevertheless, the net impact has been to make readers feel that nei- ther side has the moral high ground; the public has adopted a "plague on both your houses" attitude. A recent national poll of Americans' attitudes toward Israel and the Palestinians underscores this point. Only 17 percent of Americans believe the United States should take Israel's side in the conflict, and 74 percent said our nation should favor neither side. All in all, Detroit Jews seem to feel more isolated from their neighbors because of the intifada. Assuming the intifada peters out, as it seems to be doing, it will take many years to restore more hopefill- attitudes and rebuild rela- tionships to the point they were five years ago. And to think that had Yasser Arafat prepared his people for peace, and ulti- mately accepted Prime Minister Ehud Barak's offer in 2000, the Palestinians could have had a nation celebrating its fourth anniversary. Instead, Israel — and Detroit Jewry — will never quite be the same. Ili
