• City: West Bloomfield Kudos: Army Helper Do you feel you're doing your part for Israel? "Most of us don't have the kind of money that's going to make a differ- ence. I just find volunteering so per- sonally invigorating." Cookie Koblin recently celebrated her 66th birthday by volunteering for three weeks at an Israeli army base as part of Sar-El, the National Project for Volunteers for Israel. She repaired and replaced microphones and speakers in helmets and repaired tank antennas. The Keego Harbor resale shop owner has been volunteering at least once a year with Israeli soldiers since 1987. I take it this is not like vacationing at a posh hotel. "The conditions are unbelievable. The workplace is 100 degrees with no air-conditioning, and you share a room with four to six people and no closets. But I come back very stimulat- ed." COOKIE KOBLIN Do you volunteer with Sar-El every time you go to Israel? "Most of the time I've done Sar-El. I have this need to help in some hands-on way; I have a problem going to Israel just to visit. I go there a mini- mum of once a year, and sometimes I've gone twice. "The last time, we had a family wedding and we stayed an extra week. But I had to cut my army duty short." How hard is it to fit the trip into your work schedule? — Harry Kirsbaum, staff writer For more information about Sar-El, see its Web site: www.sar el.org - Cookie Koblin, right, and a friend work on communications gear. /REPORT A DOER... Aaron Ciechanover, 57, and Avram Hershko, 67, are the first Israelis to win a Nobel in chemistry. They share the prize with Irwin Rose, 78, an American, for their work in the 1980s on how the human body fights off faulty proteins and diseases like cancer. The Israelis are associated with the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in Medical Sciences at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. Ciechanover is the director. Hershko, a professor, is originally from Hungary. Rose is a specialist in the physiology and bio- physics department at the University of California- Irvine medical school. The three men will share the $1.3 million prize. Four Israelis have previously won Nobel Prizes: Menachem Begin shared the peace prize in 1978 with Egypt's Anwar Sadat. In 1994, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin shared the peace prize with Palestinian Yasser Arafat. In 1966, Shmul Yosef Agnon shared the literature prize. — On The Cover: Darren Hollander, 31/2, and brother Matthew, 6, of Farmington Hills work in the Apples and Honey garden.
