The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum
will host its first gathering in Michigan
Tuesday, Oct. 19, in celebration of the
Washington, D.C., landmark's second
decade of existence.
Chaired by Farmington Hills-based
real estate developer and museum coun-
cil member Mickey Shapiro, the tribute
dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the
Townsend Hotel, Birmingham.
Shapiro said the event gives existing
and potential supporters the opportunity
to hear first hand the role the museum
plays in advancing and disseminating
knowledge about the unprecedented
tragedy of the Holocaust.
Shapiro, the son of Holocaust sur-
vivors, was appointed by President
George W. Bush to the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum Council in 2002.
Leo Melamed, internationally
renowned futures trader and chairman
emeritus of the Chicago Mercantile
Exchange, will be the featured speaker at
the event. Melamed, who escaped from
Poland with his parents in 1939, was
instrumental in transforming the
exchange from a secondary domestic
agricultural marketplace into the world's
foremost financial futures exchange. The
author of Escape to the Futures, he has
been a member of the council since
1992.
Also featured at the dinner will be
Sara J. Bloomfield, museum director
who has expanded the institution's
national presence, created innovative
educational programs and partnerships,
established the Center for Advanced
Holocaust Studies and launched its
Committee on Conscience that address-
es issues of contemporary genocide.
Chartered by a unanimous act of
Congress in 1980 and located adjacent
to the National Mall in Washington,
D.C., the museum strives to broaden
public understanding of the history of
the Holocaust through multifaceted pro-
grams, exhibitions, research and publica-
tions; collecting and preserving material
evidence; art and artifacts related to the
Holocaust; annual Holocaust commem-
orations known as Days of
Remembrance; distribution of educa-
tional materials and teacher resources;
and a variety of public programming
designed to enhance understanding of
the Holocaust and related issues.
