Freedman left to take a position in
Jewish Life and Learning at the JCC,
and "we are delighted to continue work-
ing with Freedman in
her new capacity,"
Blumenstein said.
The remaining
employee, Lizzie
Doppelt, will continue
to facilitate and plan pro-
grams. The center, which
has reduced operating
Beller
hours until new staffers
are found, will be open
Sundays from 10 a.m.-6
p.m. and other days for groups by reser-
vation.
"We've been open nine months and
about 3,000 people from a variety of
groups, including from inner-city
Detroit, Hebrew schools and public
schools from Ann Arbor, Toledo and
Flint, have visited Shalom Street,"
Appelman said.

Taubman Aids Campus

Lawrence Technological University in
Southfield broke ground for the $9.6-
million A. Alfred Taubman Student
Services Center Sept. 10. The 38,000-
square-foot, three-story building is
named for the Bloomfield Hills regional
shopping center magnate
and philanthropist who
also is a former LTU stu-
dent.
Taubman donated $4
million to help build the
center, which will con-
solidate all services that
Taubman
support the 5,000 stu-
dents at the private uni-
versity. The building will
feature an energy-efficient, environmen-
tally friendly design that has earned a
"green building" certification. Architects
are HarleyEllis of Southfield. Walbridge
Aldinger of Detroit is construction man-
ager.
Other universities with programs and
facilities named for Taubman include
Harvard, Brown and the University of
Michigan.
"Just as Mr. Taubman redefined the
shopping experience for millions of
Americans through innovative merchan-
dising and retail design," LTU President
Charles Chambers said, "our new
Student Services Center will redefine the
student experience at Lawrence Tech."

"YIDDISH YES! A Day of Yiddish
Culture," a day of lively performance

Oak Park.
The event is sponsored by the
Workmen's Circle-Arbeter Ring and the
JCC as part of "Celebrate 350: Jewish
Life in America — 1654-2004." The
event's intent is to reconnect Jews with
their historical roots by offering the
sounds, movements, visuals and tastes of
Yiddish culture.
Yiddish performers, educators and
scholars will lead such activities as lan-
guage lessons, art projects, music, danc-
ing, singing, folktales, games, Yiddish
proverbs and "Birobidzhan — An
Experiment with Soviet Jewish Culture."
Yiddish CDs, tapes, books and T-shirts
will be sold.
The evening will conclude with
"Dinner at Bubbe's," which will include
music from Moldova, a site of pogroms
at the end of the 19th century.
Activities begin with registration at
12:15 p.m. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. There
is a charge for the program. For infor-

Shalom Street Transitions

Two staffers of Shalom Street, Director
Jonathan Beller and part-time Jewish
program coordinator Joan Freedman
have resigned, said an organizational
representative of the children's museum
4-
4 1 the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
Penny Blumenstein, chair of Shalom
Street committee, said that Beller did a
@eat job, especially getting the museum
p and running, and in helping to estab-
lish the Shalom Street Players, the muse-
um's theater company. He also was
instrumental in making "Diggin Israel,"
a summer program at the museum a
success. The program served more than
1,000 children and 400 adults.
"We want to sincerely thank him; he
*as a great asset to the museum," said
flarlene Appelman, chief Jewish educa-
tion officer of the Federation's Alliance
for Jewish Education. But coming from
the theater world, the position wasn't
fulfilling enough for him, she said.
