know who they are?" an incredulous
Kerwin asked his aunt. "Of course I
do," was the reply. Kerwin said he
was very careful delivering the lamps
that day-
"My Aunt Nellie and my father,"
Kerwin said, "they taught me how to
treat people: Do the right thing, and
it will turn out. And don't ... ever ...
give up."
ffnai Moshe Stalwart
Rabbi Elliott Pachter of
Congregation B'nai Moshe described
Mrs. Friedman's strength and dignity.
At age 69, she took a driver's training
course and, later, became the late
Cantor Louis Klein's neighbor and
unofficial chauffeur. Living just
north of the West Bloomfield B'nai
Moshe, she also became an almost
full-time volunteer in the synagogue
office.
When Mrs. Friedman was asked to
be the synagogue's first Volunteer of
the Year 10 years ago, Rabbi Pachter
said she declined until others were
given the same honor. She also wrote
him birthday cards in perfect
Hebrew, sneaking them into his
locked office, and invited Rabbi
Pachter and his family to use her
apartment's swimming pool.
She provided towels; she provided
food and then his own key so that
the rabbi could spend some quality
time with his family.
Rabbi Pachter paid tribute to the
devotion of Mrs. Friedman's son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Mel and Susie
Friedman, and the caregivers who
helped her during her last year. "It
was an honor to know her," the rabbi
said. "It was an honor to have
received her love."
Nellie Friedman is survived by her
son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Melvyn
and Susan Friedman of West
Bloomfield; sister and brother-in-law,
Marion and Sidney Kerwin; grand-
children, Cindy Friedman, Lowell
and Jennifer Friedman, Jeffrey
Friedman; great-grandson, Max Theo
Friedman.
She was the beloved wife of the
late Max Friedman.
Interment was at Hebrew
