THE BIG SCREEN

Broadway: The Golden Age, in
which writer/director Rich McKay
shines a bright light on a bygone era
of American theater, opens Friday,
Oct. 1, at the Maple Theatre in
Bloomfield Township. Using inter-
views, home movies and found
footage, more than 100 legendary
Broadway figures appear, including
Stephen Sondheim, Tovah Feldsuh

Israeli filmmaker Nitzan Aviram's
documentary, Beyond Hitler's
Grasp, about how Bulgaria protect-
ed every one of its 50,000 Jews from
the Nazis during the Holocaust,
screens 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at
Wayne State University's new
Welcome Center, at Warren and
Woodward, on the WSU campus in
Detroit. A discussion with the film-
maker, currently in town working
on The Accursed Book, a documen-
tary of the Protocols of the Elders of
