"I want Sen. Kerry to win, but I
hope he doesn't appoint [former
President] Jimmy Carter or [former
Secretary of State] James Baker to
work on the Middle East situation,"
said Diane Pomish of West
Bloomfield. "They are too pro-
Palestinian."
A man wondered how Sen. Kerry
would handle questions on Israel at
the upcoming first debate Sept. 30
with President Bush. A woman
expressed concern that the debate was
being held on Sukkot. "Orthodox Jews
won't be watching television — and
they're the ones who need to know
how he stands on Israel," she said.

Cam Kerry, 54, converted from
Catholicism to Judaism just before he
married Oak Park native Kathy
Weinman, 49, also a lawyer, in 1983.
She attended Oak Park High School,
went to Hebrew school at
Congregation B'nai David and gradu-
ated from the University of Michigan
Law School. She met Cam, a Boston
College Law School graduate, when
both worked for the same law firm in
Washington, D.C.
Cam and John Kerry learned of
their Jewish connection when a
genealogical study into their family
roots uncovered the fact that their
father's parents were Jewish. The Kerry
family was traced back to a small town
in the Austrian empire, now part of
the Czech Republic. Before immigrat-
ing to America, the Kerry ancestors
changed their name from Kohn and
converted to Catholicism.
Cam Kerry, pleased now to be
known as "Chaim," said he's proud of
his conversion to Judaism. "One of
the reasons I wanted to convert was so
that I could participate fully in the bat
mitzvahs of my two daughters [now
13 and 17]," he explained. "And a
major reason I'm working hard on my
brother's campaign is to insure their
futures are secure."
Kathy Weinman, who still "feels
Michigan is her home," introduced
her husband to the audience, pointing
out he has "no fancy title, other than
just plain 'brother.'" She also intro-
duced her father, Joe Weinman of
Farmington Hills. Her mother, Anne,
was campaigning for John Kerry with
other women in Michigan.
