STEPHEN IAN MARKEL, 38, of Ann
Arbor, died Sept. 18, 2004. He was
born in Bethesda, Md. He attended
King and Greenhills schools, the
University of Wisconsin and the
University of Michigan, from where he
earned a bachelor of arts degree in corn-
munications and a master's degree from
the School of Information.
He completed course work and pre-
liminary examinations toward a Ph.D.
from the School of Information, before
leaving it to join several classmates in a
Web site design company, Diamond
Bullet Design based in Ann Arbor.
Mr. Markers life was abbreviated,
partly as a result of a skiing accident he
suffered 18 months ago. As a boy, he
received awards from the Ann Arbor
Hockey Association for being the most
inspired player; he was a first-team all-
state soccer player; and he excelled at
golf, skeet shooting, skiing. His well-lit,
front-lawn ice rink and soccer/football
field was a magnet for the neighborhood
children.
Mr. Markel is survived by his loving
wife, Ellen D. Rambo; sons, Charles G.
and Timothy C. Markel; parents,
Geraldine and Sheldon; siblings, Laura
and Joseph O'Connor, David and Stacy
Markel; in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. John
Rambo, Clarke and Tom Chenoweth,
Dan Rambo; grandmother, Sylvia Markel.
Services were held at the Beth Israel
Congregation in Ann Arbor. Memorial
contributions may be made to the
University of Michigan Trauma Center.

JAMES H. MARKS, 93, of Farmington
Hills, died Sept. 24, 2004. An account-
ant, Mr. Marks worked with Cunning-

ham Drugs and
Wrigley's Supermar-
kets. He was a life-
long member and

and past president
of Beth Elders, a
member of Masonic
Marks
Perfection Lodge
and of ROMEOS
(Retired Old Men Eating Out).
Mr. Marks is survived by his wife,
Phyllis Marks of Farmington Hills;
daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and
Eliot Bank, Paula and Melvyn Kalt; son
and daughter-in-law, Michael and
Jeannette Wertheimer; grandchildren,
Katherine and Larry Garland, Amy and
Todd Franklin, Julie and Robert
Greenfield, Brian and Sara Kalt, Randy,
Jordon and Allison Wertheimer, Cindy
Bank and Richard Marks, Michael and
Patty Bank; great-grandchildren, Addie,
Ellery, Stella and Mae Garland, Lily and
Chloe Franklin, Benjamin Kalt, Devin
Wertheimer, Matthew Marks, Brock and
Shelby Bank. He was the beloved broth-
er of the late Eugene Marks.
Interment at Beth El Memorial
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to the Richard C. and Renda Hertz Gift
for Life Fund at Temple Beth El, 7400
Telegraph, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301.
