The Drive Is On Course

Regarding the controversy surrounding
the decision of 106.7-the Drive to fea-
ture the music of Jewish rock artists on
Rosh Hashanah ("Rock Hashana,"
Sept. 24, page 20), I disagree with
Anti-Defamation League Michigan
Region Executive Director Betsy
Kellman, who called the decision "in
poor taste and insensitive to the Jewish
community."
On the contrary, I feel the playing of
the music and the highlighting of the
heritage of Jewish rock stars was an
honor to the Jews of this community.
This station highlights Irish music on
St. Patrick's Day and Polish music on
Paczki Day — so why not honor Jews
and their contributions to the music
industry?
My only complaint was that I found
out about this special program too late
to hear it. I'm hoping the station
decides to repeat it next year and per-
haps on Chanukah, too. The station
has nothing to be ashamed of.

Go, Rock Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah should be seen as one
of the happiest days of the year on the
Jewish calendar and is not a "solemn
holiday" as Anti-Defamation League
Michigan Region Executive Director
Betsy'Kellman and many other people
tend to believe ("Rock Hashanah,"
Sept. 24, page 20).
Rosh Hashanah has become a
solemn holiday because it is associated
with Yom Kippur, yet, the two days
are very different Ro-sh Hashanah is a
happy day in which we celebrate the
new year whereas Yom Kippur is a
more serious day in which we reflect
on what has occurred in the past year.
Station 106.7-the Drive should be
congratulated that it showcased some
of the many Jewish artists. Rosh
Hashanah was a very appropriate time
in which to do so since Jews all over
the world were celebrating being-
Jewish.

In the last election, I voted for the
Gore-Lieberman ticket. I am voting
for President Bush this time. The list
. of John Kerry's promises represent
mostly deeds that President Bush has
done.
President Bush has supported Israel's

right of self-defense, construction of
the security fence, disengagement from
Gaza, creation of a Palestinian state,
and no right of return for Palestinians
to Israel. Bush did not communicate
with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
for three years. He restricted the sale of
weapons while selling Israel 5,000 pre-
cision bombs, and he worked with
Arab states, in particular Saudi Arabia,
to control flow of money to terrorist
organizations.
Bush directly supported Israel with
finance and exports from Israel. He is
against bigotry in any type or shape,
including anti-Semitism.
Since 9-11, he has been hard on
countries that sponsor terror. Libya is
giving up nuclear activity and support
for terror. Syria is moving forces out of
Lebanon following U.N. resolutions
sponsored by the U.S. and following
Secretary of State Colin Powell's many
travels to Damascus.
The U.S. and Bush are working hard
against the Iranian nuclear program.
Lastly, Bush supports Israel in an
unprecedented way despite criticism of
the U.S. by the European Union and
others.

Standing With Kerry

When will our people wake up to the
fact that we and: Israel need a viable
American economy if we are- to survive
while fighting- this war on terrorism?
The Bush administration only speaks
of doing things, but seldom acts on
them. Promises of funding for. No
Child Left Behind, first responders in
the event of another attack, secure bor-
ders, veterans' health care and other
programs have never received a cent of
government money. So what makes us
think that George Bush's promises for
the continued security of Israel will be
kept?
At least John Kerry's voting record
(as it pertains to Israel) over the past
20 years is proof that he stands for a
secure Israel and he means what he
says.
He has also promised to approach
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a
hands-on manner, something that the
Bush people have avoided. Our gov-
ernment's involvement in that struggle
is paramount to it ever being settled.
If we are to even hope for peace in
our generation, we must vote for the
John Kerry-John Edwards ticket in
November.
