was an enthusiastic volunteer distrib-
uting these tempting treats on a
frosty winter night). Communal
Passover seders at the Chabad House
are a rousing experience.
To many students, Chabad House
is "a home away from home." In
Rabbi Alter's words: "I am not just a
rabbi; I'm an older brother, a friend,
a shoulder to lean on" — providing
an emotional rapport as he counsels
students one-on-one, helping to sort

out the many issues that college
youth face.
In short, Chabad House is an invi-
tation to an inclusive experience of
vibrant, "hands-on" Judaism com-
bined with Torah study — enabling
U-M students to meet the range of
their intellectual and spiritual needs
in a "user-friendly" atmosphere per-
meated by acceptance and love of fel-
low Jew. ❑

more likely outcome is continuing
violence, insurgency and probably
civil war, leading to an increasing
influx of terrorists to the region. In
either event, Israel will not like its
new neighbors!
Bush has effectively withdrawn
from the Israeli-Palestinian peace
process and has encouraged most of
Ariel Sharon's actions. Given the
high Palestinian birthrate and the
lower Jewish birthrate, if peace and a
Palestinian state are not achieved in a
very few years, Israel will become a
minority Jewish state. It is illogical to
believe that the world will support an
apartheid state in Israel; the Jewish
state will disappear. Nevertheless,
Mayor Koch characterizes those who
favor pressure for a peaceful solution

with the Palestinians as having a
"radical left anti-Israel philosophy".
Mayor Koch should reconsider.
The Bush administration is losing
the war on terrorism and till now has
done nothing to benefit Israel other
than to make the world more dan-
gerous.
As American citizens and American
Jews, we should vote primarily on
what is in the best interest of
America. Based on Bush's failed eco-
nomic policy, disastrous deficits, lack
of a sound health care policy, threat
to social security, anti-choice philoso-
phy and fundamental lack of integri-
ty, it is easy to vote for John Kerry.
As Jew, I can find nothing in
Bush's record to change this view. ❑
