campus; the Behold Your God cam-
paign ended Sept. 21.
"It's not our problem," said
Executive Director Michael Brooks.
"It's our responsibility to go to the
Christian community and say, 'You've
got a problem."'
Together with Hillel's assistant
director Rabbi Jason Miller, Brooks
sent a letter
to the
Association
of Religious
Counselors
(ARC), a
voluntary
association
composed of
advisers and
staff of rec-
ognized
religious
Rabbi Skobac
groups at
U-M, ask-
ing for its
support.
"There is a broad consensus in
American life that even those of us
who believe that our religious stance
is right and everyone else is wrong
don't proclaim this in public," he
wrote. "In a community that publicly
affirms the principle of mutual
respect, this would understandably
be considered offensive and insult-
ing. Try to imagine a campaign by
`Catholics for Mohammed' or
Protestants for Mormonism' and you
will have some sense of how we feel."
The letter gives ARC members
three choices: "support and, in some
cases, fund Jews for Jesus and their
targeting of Jews;" "speak out against
this campaign as we would speak out
if a similar campaign were directed
against any of you;" or "remain silent
and thereby complicit in watching us
— your Jewish colleagues and neigh-
bors — disrespected ..."
The letter ends with a call to
action.
"We have only one question to ask
you and it surely demands and
deserves an answer: Which of these
three choices are you going to
make?"
According to Brooks, the most
prevalent response is silence. ❑
