Award of the U-M Business School.
He is actively involved in the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra, JARC and the
Anti-Defamation League Michigan
Region.
"Community involvement was
always in the house," Frankel said. "It's
just accepted in our house; we learned
from our parents, who were active and
still are. They are truly great philan-
thropists."
He lives in Bloomfield Hills with his
wife, Judy, and within five minutes of
his parents, two brothers and sister.
He has a son, a daughter and a 3 1 /2-
month-old granddaughter.
He doesn't do vacations. Instead, he
heads to his farm in Metamora on
weekends where he raises thorough-
breds and spends quality time with his
shovel.
His success is a family success, and it
shows in the way his parents consider
the award.
"It's a very significant evening for the
Frankel family," said Jean Frankel.
"Proud is hardly the word."
"I am proud of my family and espe-
cially what he did," said his father,
Sam, the 1984 Butzel recipient. "He's
always been devoted to Judaism, quiet-
ly. He's an unpretentious guy. He's
reserved, a little bit like me, impulsive,
and makes decisions quickly."
Stanley Frankel has a like-minded
devotion to his parents. "They're the
best. He and my mother have really
made an impact," Stanley said. "Dad
comes in every day at 91 years old, and
remembers more than I do, which is
very disconcerting."
Lawrence Jackier, outgoing
Federation president and Frankel's
friend since childhood, remembers a
small kid who played all the tough
positions on the playground.
"He was a catcher, a defensive back,"
said Jackier. "He made up for his size
with effort and energy.
"Stanley's motto is, 'Say little, do
much,"' Jackier said. "He has anony-
mously helped so many individuals
and organizations, which is the highest
form of charity.
"We had to pull him kicking and
screaming to the Butzel Award, but he
was very thrilled about that and I
think he loved the evening," Jackier
said.
Frankel still doesn't understand why
everyone is making such a big deal out
of everything. "You hope to be a role
model for your kids, as my parents
were for me," he said. "It's something
when you can get an award for some-
thing you should be doing anyhow." ❑
