salmon salad, whitefish morel, Sicilian
platter with veal picatta, meat-filled ravi-
oli and homemade lasagna, etc.
The salad dressing used is its own ...
and is also sold in bottles at the restau-
rant.
A second Alfoccino by Tony and
Frank is in Auburn Hills ... with the
same good, family dining concept and
menu selections in a very clean environ-
ment.
IN THE EARLY 1940s, while a sen-
ior at Detroit's Cass Tech High, Joe
Cornell was to emcee a show during
intermission at a school dance ... The
assistant principal asked him to meet
with the two comedians in the show to
make sure their material was clean.
The comics, 10th graders Udo Salk
and Marshall Tobin, and Joe became
friends, with Udo and Marshall coming
to his home on Detroit's east side for
spaghetti dinners with the Coronella
family ... In turn, they would invite him
for Friday night Shabbat dinners at their
homes ... Udo and Marshall learned
Sicilian tradition and Joe was shown
Jewish custom.
The three renewed their friendship
when Joe came here recently from
California to emcee the 50th anniversary
affair for Udo and Gertrude Salk, at the
Novi Doubletree.
Joe entertained ... and Udo and Mar-
shall made sure his material was clean.
THE NEW RESTAURANT slated to
serve Vietnamese, Malaysian and
Japanese food in West Bloomfield has
opened.
It is called Blue Ginger, at the former
site of Sapporo and Kimono in the Old
Orchard Shopping Center.
BIG TIME FOR a lot of nostalgia
and fun as former Detroiters Joyce and
Hank Booke of Calabasas Hills, Calif,
celebrated their 50th anniversary at the
Friar's Club in Beverly Hills.
Shindig was given by Hank and
Joyce's three daughters, Jaime
Rubenstein, Carin Nathanson, Kelly
Sher, and their spouses ... with
Detroiters coming in for the event
Chemed, "Our Life Is An Open Booke."
Detroiters in the roast-and-toast by
long-time friends included Arlene and
Ron Licht, Marilyn and Herb Racklin,
Marilyn and Mel Rothenberg, Lenore
and Phil Salomon, Rita Elken, Irving
Elken, Stacy Gordon, Mindy Aronovitz,
Beverly and Jerry Kurtis and Mary and
Allen Silverman.
Former Detroiters from around the
country included ... Dale Wolfson,
Pennsylvania; Melissa and Steve Elken,
Colorado; Annette Soffa and Marvin
Rubenstein, Las Vegas.
Several guests had also attended Joyce

and Hank's wedding 50 years ago at
Adat Shalom Synagogue on Curtis in
Detroit.
Joyce's best friend, Marilyn Racklin,
told the story of their wedding gown ...
They made a deal that whoever got mar-
ried first would buy the wedding dress
and then the other could borrow it ...
The one worn by Joyce went down the
aisle first with Marilyn.
NO WONDER THE breaded veal
cutlets at Hoa Hoa Inn (former Hoa
Kow), on Novi Road off 14 Mile, are so
popular.
They're from an original recipe by
owner Gene Woo's grandfather, Gay Yo
Woo, who learned how to make breaded
veal cutlets while a cook at the old Paul
Revere Hotel in downtown Detroit ...
The dining room there had been an
American restaurant before Gay Yo's
brother, Eugene Foo, bought the restau-
rant and called it Foo's Inn.
In the early 1940s, Gene's grandfather
had been at Ring Wong Lau on
Griswold, and then the Paul Revere
Hotel where, while with brother
Eugene, he did some improvising and
came up with the veal cutlet and a
tomato sauce much like tomato soup.
That original recipe is said to have
launched breaded veal cutlets served this
way in Chinese restaurants, where they
became a number one seller among
Chinese dishes.
Its "breading" is a cracker batter ...
and the veal is not pre-dipped, so it can
be ordered light if desired.
Other than the Chinese dishes, fish
still plays a king-size role at Hoa Hoa
with 10 styles of white fish accounting
for about 500 pounds a week, four
salmon preparations and 12 ways of
serving shrimp.
HE ADMITS TO being a mediocre
golfer, but Howard Dembs, director of
marketing and communications for the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, can brag about a feat at which
very few duffers can stick out their
chests.
Howard is now able to tell about not
only the hole-in-one he had some time
ago ... but a second ace as well ... at the
Shenandoah Golf Club in West
Bloomfield... using a six iron on the
167-yard ninth hole.
ANSWER DEPT. ... As Confucius
might say, "Better for restaurant to make
noise when open then close with silence"
... as did the short-lived Orleans Grill in
West Bloomfield ... Yossi's Israeli Cuisine
expects its opening no later than the sec-
ond week in October. ❑
