THANK YOU
FOR BEING THERE FOR OUR COMMUNITY
rabbinical team of five rabbis, he now
delivers sermons "only occasionally."
The most recent was on the second
day of Rosh Hashanah last week when
he gave an updated version of
"Promises." The original is included
in Renewing Jewish Faith. The high-
light of that sermon was his salute to
people in the congregation who have
had long and successful marriages.
"Remember, one of the most
important reasons to give any sermon
is to encourage people to lead a caring
and decent life," he pointed out.
Rabbi Groner, who will turn 73
next month, has been slowed by
Parkinson's disease and the effects of a
mild stroke he suffered in 1999. The
book contains a sermon on the latter
episode, titled "The Missing Piece."
"There is so much for which we
ought to be grateful," he wrote. "It is
when our blessings are threatened that
we discover how precious they are."
Told he looks "very good," he
replies with a final short story: "There
are four stages in a person's life:
Infancy, youth, maturity, and 'Boy,
you look nice.'" Li
