Getting His Hicks MIKE ROSENBAUM Special to the Jewish News J ordan Gruber was selected Big Ten Offensive 'Player of the Week in men's soccer for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5. The Michigan State University senior for- ward netted four goals and added two assists Gruber in three games. The Birmingham Groves graduate scored two goals, including the game-winner, in the Spartans' 3-0 sea- son-opening victory at Bowling Green. He added one goal and two assists in a 4-2 win over St. Francis (Penn.), then scored again in a 3-0 victory over Western Illinois. Birmingham Seaholm's M.G. Shapiro was promoted to head football coach, after serving as junior varsity coach last year. A 1997 Seaholm graduate, Shapiro was a starting guard/defensive end who captained the Maples his senior year. While attending the University of Michigan, Shapiro helped coach Seaholm players during summer work- outs and team camp. He became a full- time coach at Seaholm after graduation. Shapiro's current assistants include long-time Seaholm offensive coordinator Matt Turner, who held the same posi- tion when Shapiro played for the Maples. Having his former coach as his assistant "brings out the best in me," Shapiro says. "I have so much respect for him that I find myself trying to do my best in front of him." West Bloomfield's quintet of Jewish football players includes two returning seniors, two-way lineman Mike Burda and running back/linebacker Sam Rosenbaum, as well as three juniors: Mike Peres and David Blumer, who both play linebacker and fullback, plus two-way lineman Mike Levine. Farmington's football team includes Josh Rollins, a junior offensive tackle/ linebacker. Junior linebacker/ guard Gabe Schwartz is a first-year varsity player at Farmington Harrison. Brian Indianer has displayed a nose for the football while playing for Walled Lake Central's freshman team. Indianer recovered an onside kick attempt and two fumbles in the Vikings' 20-6 victory over Canton. Indianer nearly duplicated his feat against Westland John Glenn, recovering an onside kick try and anoth- er fumble as Central won its third straight game, 22-15. Indianer is a starting tight end and defensive' end. He receiVed Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit 's inau- gural Herbert W. Kaufman boys' schol- ar/athlete award last spring. Liz Traison won the girls' award. Lloyd Strausz, 86, won the table ten- nis championship in the 85-89 age group at the Michigan Senior Olympics last month. It was Strausz' third senior title in the past four years. A lifelong table tennis enthusi- ast, Strausz will com- pete in the National Senior tournament in Pittsburgh next June. Strausz Shir Shalom defeat- ed defending champi- on Young Israel 22-4 to win the Men's Club Inter-Congregational Softball League title. Shir Shalom was 7-0 in the regular season, and beat Sha2rey Zedek in the playoff semi-finals. Shir Shalom's players were: David Blume, Mike Cooper, Brian Efrusy, Craig Efrusy, Richard Elias, David Gach, Gary Grossman, Dan Lippitt, Eric Mintz, Howard Rosner, Ryan Schneider, Bob Tarnow and Howard Whitman. Danny Aronovitz successfully defend- ed his club golf championship at Knollwood Country Club, while Bluma Schecter won the women's title. At Franklin Hills, Katie Solomon repeated as the women's champion and Lyle Wolberg won on the men's side. Richard Small and Judy Porvin were the men's and women's champs at Wabeek. Kevin Fisher finished the Lake Placid Ironman in 13 hours and three minutes. The event was Fisher's first full ironman competition. He posted times of one hour 12 minutes in the swim, 6:49 on the bike and 4:45 in the marathon run. Pistons second-round draft pick Rickey Paulding will try to develop his skills this season playing for Hapoel Jerusalem, an Israeli pro basketball team.
