3-Girls Are 8a-a-a-a-d! "Chosen chicks" deconstruct years of tradition in fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza. 0' 6' ON SALE NOW "The J-Girls" BILL CARROLL Special to the Jewish News uestion: What are nice Jewish girls doing in a show like this? Answer: They're singing, danc- ing and doing some comedy - and, oh yes, even a striptease or two. The show is Vice Jewish Girls Gone Bad, a refreshing mix of jokes, music and burlesque that will play Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 1-2, at the 100- seat 1515 Broadway nightery in down- town Detroit. The production will be the "nightcap" of an unusual doubleheader that has nothing to do with baseball at Comerica Park The "opener" for Vice Jewish Girls will be Laura's Bush, a political satire in support of MoveOn.org, which runs Sept. 30-Oct. 10 at 1515 Broadway. Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad features six performers, four of them Jewish, and is a fast-paced revue loaded with self-depre- cating humor and sexuality. It's complete with kick-lines, pasties and a hilarious rendition of a scene from Fiddler on the Roof. The show has played to sold-out crowds in various venues in the Northeast and now is at the brink of its Midwest tour. "Jewish women get a bad rap, from JAPs to Jewish mothers," said Susannah Perlman, one of the performers from New York. She's also the show's produc- er, main writer and "ringleader." "Jewish women could use some improvement from the kvetching and cliches that people have come to know, Q love and hate," she said. "Nice Jewish Girls tells about the girls who learned to smoke in Hebrew school, got drunk at their bat mitzvahs and sat through 12- hour seders; they're the 'chosen chicks' who boldly dare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt." Perlman, 31, whose brother is a Conservative rabbi in New York, points out that she "was conceived in Ann Arbor," where her parents lived during the time her father, the late Dr. Lawrence Perlman, was teaching at the University of Michigan. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin and an Interlcohen alum, Susannah Perlman began her theater career as an apprentice at Traverse City's Cherry County Playhouse. "I'm thrilled to return to Michigan," she gushed, "and bring this great group of J-girls with me." Others in the show are comedienne Cynthia Levin, singer-songwriter Michelle Citrin, spoken word artist Vanessa Hidary — all out-of-towners — and two "shiksa dancers" from Detroit: Sparkly Devil and Goldie Adore, both known for their burlesque artistry.
