The most solemn Jewish holiday of the
year is often mentioned in biographies
of famous Jews.
KIRK DOUGLAS, who became
more observant in the early 1990s, says
that like many Jews, he drifted away
from the religious background of his
youth. However, no matter where he
was, he maintained a connection to
Judaism by attending Yom Kippur serv-
ices.. He credits this "connection" with
helping to spark his return to obser-
vance late in life.
In a lighter vein, comedian ROBERT
KLEIN said he once accepted a club
date on Yorn Kippur against his better
judgment. He got an infected wart.
Klein says he has never worked again on
Yom Kippur.
Similarly, comedian ROBERT
SCHIMMEL mentioned in an inter-
view that he declined a lucrative club
date that fell on Yorn Kippur. Schimmel
said the club owner Gilled him "the
Sandy Koufax of comedy."

The club owner, of course, was referring
to the decision of baseball great SANDY
KOUFAX to sit out a 1965 World
Series game that fell on Yom Kippur.
Other Jewish baseball players who sat
out the High Holy
Days include the
late Tiger great and
Hall of Famer

HANK GREEN-
BERG, current Los

Angeles Dodgers
star SHAWN
GREEN and for-
mer Cubs and A's
player KEN

HOLTZMAN.

Ken Holtzman:

Yom Kippur
observant.

Holtzman, an
excellent pitcher who won three World
Series games for the Oakland A's, sat out
a 1973 playoff game against the
Baltimore Orioles that fell on the holi-
day. Yom Kippur morning, Holtzman
was surprised when a huge limousine
appeared to whisk him from his
Baltimore hotel to a local synagogue for
services.
As reported in last February's Forward
newspaper, "He was then escorted to
front-row center of the synagogue,
where he was offered a handshake by a
distinguished-looking man standing

near his family. 'Ken, let me introduce
myself,' the man said. 'I'm JERRY
HOFFBERGER, owner of the Orioles.'
For Holtzman, the moral of the story
was simple: `Jews stick together:" -
In the August 2004 issue of
Lubatvich.com , you'll find the story of
Rabbi MOSHE FELLER, director of
Chabad Lubavitch of the Upper
Midwest and a fanatic baseball fan.
Feller has been giving Jewish baseball
stars gifts of tefillin ever since Koufax's
refusal to play on Yom Kippur. (He met
with Koufax just before the '65 Series
began, and Koufax was very moved by
the gift.)
Besides Koufax, to whom he gave
tefillin designed for a lefty, Feller has
met with and given tellifin to
Holtzman, former Yankee MIKE
EPSTEIN and current Red Sox players
GABE KAPLER and KEVIN YOUK-

ILIS.

Right up there with the baseball stories
is the tale of the late SAMMY DAVIS
JR., who converted to Judaism in the
mid-1950s. In 1959, Davis refused to
work on Yom Kippur while filming
Porgy and Bess. Director OTTO PRE-
MINGER, who was Jewish but notori-
ous for his insensitivity to other people's
feelings, got angry and called the leg-
endary SAM GOLDWYN, the film's
producer.
Goldwyn, who was not an observant
Jew, called Davis and wanted to know if
it was true about his refusing to work..
Davis said that as a Jew, he could not
work on the Day of Atonement. There
was silence for a moment, with
Goldwyn no doubt noting that stopping
production would cost $30,000, a large
sum then. Finally, Goldwyn said, "Bless
you." Production on the film was
stopped for Yom Kippur.

Perhaps our favorite celebrity Yom
Kippur story is an anecdote told by
ALEXANDER BERNSTEIN, the son
of the late LEONARD BERNSTEIN.
Leonard Bernstein came from a long
line of talmudic scholars and grew up in
a very observant home. Bernstein was
moderately observant as an. adult.
However, he loved to hear various can-
tors sing on Yom Kippur and hear their
musical interpretations of the traditional
prayers.
Alexander says his father would hire a
taxicab for the day and "shul hop"
around Manhattan. He knew, of course,
that riding was forbidden on Yom
