The study involving the mutation to the BRCA genes, which have been linked to breast and ovarian cancers in Ashkenazi Jewish women, was pub- lished last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to the Human Genome Project in Washington, some 2 per- cent of Ashkenazi Jews carry one of the BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 mutations that have been linked to the cancers. A 1997 study into the risk of breast and ovarian cancers among Ashkenazi Jews found that, by the age of 70, a woman with the mutations has a 56 percent chance of getting breast can- cer and a 17 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer. General Assembly in New York, Bush also called on Israel to impose a freeze on settlements in the West Bank. "Israel should impose a settlement freeze, dismantle unauthorized out- posts, end the daily humiliation of the Palestinian people and avoid any actions that prejudice final negotia- tions," Bush said. "And world leaders should withdraw all favor and support from any Palestinian ruler who fails his people and betrays their cause." Group Wants Laws Passed Water, Water New York/JTA — Stronger legislation and prosecution are necessary to com- bat the resurgence in anti-Semitism in Europe, a European group said. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, which is part of the Council of Europe, called on its 45 member nations to "ensure that criminal law in the field of combating racism covers anti-Semitism." The commission wants govern- ments to penalize intentional acts of public incitement to violence, hatred or discrimination; public insults and defamation; threats against a person or group; and the expression of anti- Semitic ideologies. "It looks now like the Europeans are very much fatigued, very tired with the Palestinian efforts, and won't give them the hand," Shalom told a meeting of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in New York.
