Chabad's Children of Chernobyl is
funded entirely by private donations.
The cost of the flight and subsequent
care averages about $15,000 per
child.
The Oct. 3 benefit concert will
help raise funds for the organization.
Community activist Linda Klein
will be honored at the concert. Klein
of Oak Park is a gerontologist and
nursing home administrator and a
member of the Jewish Federation's
Elderly Services and Community
Education committees. She's a com-
mittee member of CCOC.
"The goal is to evacuate 3,000 chil-
dren,” said CCOC-Michigan Region's
Phyllis Meer. "Parents there are beg-
ging to get their kids out."
CCOC also sends medical equip-
ment (such as a mammography
machine), medical supplies and cloth-
ing to the Chernobyl area. It has
rehabilitated orphanages there. Many
children are abandoned in orphanages
because of malformations and mental
and physical challenges caused by the
radiation.
"It's heartbreaking," says Meer.
"The radiation is there; it doesn't go
away," says Sharfman.
"This is not political," she says.
"We're rescuing children." E
