Will Michael Moore be involved?
"We have a personal request into him.
He's very busy with the pre-election, but
my husband thinks he'll kick in some
money. He did see a copy of the Jewish
News article on Zeitouna [July 11,
2003] and he said, 'This is great. This is
what you should be filming."
LAURIEWI HI
City: Ann Arbor
Kudos: Filming Peace
Psychotherapist Laurie White, a founding
member of the Ann Arbor Area
Committee for Peace, started dabbling in
film when she and her husband, Jack
Stanzler, produced their pal Michael
Moore's first film, "Roger and Me."
Laurie, an Ann Arbor Reconstructionist
Havurah member, went on to make her
own documentaries including the current
one on Zeitouna, an Ann Arbor Jewish
and Arab women's group to which she
belongs.
You've made 15 documentaries and
videos. What motivates you?
"I make most of my films to make
social change, to get people to focus
together on a common vision. I made a
film about growing up female based on
the Jewish group TOVA (Telling Our
Visions Association) and two others set
in Ghana and Vietnam about combat-
ing violence against women in other cul-
tures. "
Can people get involved with the film?
"It takes a village to make a film!
We've had brainstorming sessions with
the community, and we're looking for
people to be ambassadors for the project
so it gets seen. Others can help with
money or food and transportation at
shoots. Then there's passing along the
ideas of co-existence. As a friend said,
An enemy is someone whose story you
haven't heard yet."
— Sharon Luckerman, staffwriter
What's special about your new film?
"Refusing to be Enemies, its working
tide, will document the model of
Zeitouna, six Jewish and six Arab mem-
bers. Zeitouna is about being the peace
you want to see. We practice dialogue,
and I'm told that no one's captured that
process on film. So it'll be a first.

THIS WEEK
Self-Reflection
The High Holidays are a time of introspection, to
look inward and decide what it is about your life
that makes the world a better place — and what you
should repent before God for.
Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown Friday, is a
solemn day, far unlike the frivolity of Purim or the
joy of Simchat Torah.
But it is almost universally cited as the most signif-
icant Jewish holiday because of what it stands for:
self-evaluation and self-change.
This Yom Kippur, let us affirm our collective and
individual will to not only fight the forces of evil
wherever they arise, but also commit to changes in
our lives that bring sweetness to others.
The haunting melody of Kol Nidrei, which asks
for release from vows or promises that cannot be
kept in accordance with Jewish law, gives pause for
us to reflect on what is truly important in our lives.
Dinar chatimah tovah. May you be sealed for a
good year.
And Shabbat shalom!
