At Issue

Oak Park debate theme:
presidential politics.

T

emple Emanu-El will host a
free community debate on
Jewish issues and the presiden-
tial election, especially the U.S. role in
trying to secure Mideast peace. The
Washington, D.C.-based speakers will
debate at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at
the temple, 14450 W. 10 Mile, Oak
Park.
Panelists will be:
• Ira Forman, executive director of the
National Jewish Democratic Council,
research director of the Solomon Project
and editor of the recently published
book Jews in American Politics.
• Jay Lefkowitz, former deputy assis-
tant to President George W. Bush on
domestic affairs and a member of the
Republican Jewish Coalition.
The moderator will be Marc
Kruman, history department chairman
at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Questions will be taken from the
audience.
Rabbi Joseph Klein and temple mem-
ber Robert Olender also were instru-
mental in planning the event.
"This is a critical election year and the
Jewish vote is important," said Dolores
Galea, who chairs the
Emanu-El adult educa-
tion committee. "With
Michigan a swing state,
both parties are trying to
communicate to us their
positions on Israel and
the Mideast peace
process. That is the rea-
son that national figures
are willing to fly into
Detroit the day after
Yom Kippur."
A National Jewish
Democratic Council poll
Forman
conducted in August
held that U.S. Jewish voters favored
Sen. John F. Kerry over President Bush
by 75-22 percent. "The poll was criti-
cized by the Republicans as being parti-
san, and it is certainly clear that many
American Jews consider Bush a great
friend to Israel," said Galea.
"Every election is critical, but this
may be more than any other. It is
important that we understand the
issues and the differences between the
parties."
